Belmont Golf Course

Richmond, Virginia, USACentral Virginia

Belmont Golf Course in Richmond offers a historically rich and thoughtfully updated 12-hole layout that combines parkland terrain with precise, strategic play. Perfect for all skill levels, this public course features excellent practice facilities and a welcoming atmosphere, making it a standout golfing destination in Central Virginia.

Course Overview

Belmont Golf Course offers a compelling blend of history, challenge, and accessibility within Richmond's urban landscape. Originally an 18-hole layout, the course was thoughtfully reduced to 12 holes to enhance pace of play, making it an engaging destination for golfers seeking a demanding yet manageable round. Spanning a par 66, Belmont's design delivers a subtle test of shot-making that demands accuracy and strategic thinking rather than sheer power. The course weaves through mature hardwoods and open fairways, grounding players in a parkland-style setting that softens the urban backdrop without compromising the challenge.

The course is renowned for its role in golf history as the only Virginia venue to have hosted a major championship – the 1949 PGA Championship. This historic note enriches each shot, especially as you navigate the tighter fairways and well-placed bunkers that frequently guard the greens. Belmont’s routing favors precision over length, offering target golf that rewards thoughtful club selection. The greens are well-maintained and present consistent speeds, inviting a variety of putting lines.

Belmont is distinctly approachable for players of all abilities. Beginner-friendly programs, including those led by First Tee instructors, provide a welcoming entry into the sport, while the course itself challenges intermediate and advanced players with its cleverly positioned hazards and subtle elevation changes. Alongside the main course, the Little Belle course – a six-hole par 3 layout – extends a perfect option for quick practice or juniors starting out.

The practice facilities include an ample driving range, a dedicated chipping area, and a sizable putting green, catering to players focused on refining their short game and long shots alike. Belmont’s staff is noted for its friendly engagement and support, enhancing the overall experience.

Walkers will appreciate the manageable distance between holes and well-kept paths, though golfers should prepare for some elevation shifts. Those planning a visit should know that the course encourages brisk play to maintain flow, balancing enjoyment with efficiency. Belmont Golf Course stands as a vibrant example of a public golf facility that honors tradition while serving a diverse community of players in Richmond.

Just played the 12 hole course today with my kids who are just getting into golf. This was our first time at Belmont so it was no surprise we had a rough time trying to figure everything out. As we are all beginners we were trying our hardest to keep moving as fast as we could. We didn't stop for more than maybe a minute trying to find our balls that we thought were still in play, but even with us trying our best the marshall came up to us right after we all hit our tee shots on the 3rd hole and was very aggressive towards us in saying that we need to play faster. I tried to tell him we were all just starting to play and learning and we were sorry but he responded with a nasty look and said "y'all are holding everyone up, if y'all can't speed up then you will be asked to leave." I understand that we aren't the fastest but in my opinion the way were approached was very inappropriate and the threat of getting kicked off the course is the reason why I may never go back.

Really enjoyed my round at Belmont. This course is one of the best public courses in the Richmond area and is full of history. The 1949 PGA championship was hosted here and remains the only course in Virginia to have hosted a major championship. The course itself is relatively difficult and is among the toughest layouts I’ve ever played despite its diminutive stature as a par 66 for 18 holes. This course is a must play and is a good test for golfers of all skill levels.

This golf course is set up for all levels of play. For kids, 1st Tee has professional instructors to teach you the fundamentals of the game. ie: etiquette, respect, and how to enjoy this game. The 18-hole course was shortened to 12 about 5 years ago. Now, instead of 5 hour rounds, ur done in 3. Plus, there is Little Belle, which is a 6 hole, par 3 course. A huge putting green, a driving range, and a chipping area. So folks. Enjoy a slice of Belmont or spend all day working on your game. The staff is fantastic and helpful. Go play and support our local gem here in Lakeside.
