Lake Monticello Golf Course

Palmyra, Virginia, USACentral Virginia

Lake Monticello Golf Course in Palmyra, Virginia, presents an 18-hole public layout with rolling hills and a mix of approachable and challenging holes. Its elevation changes and well-maintained greens offer players of all skill levels an enjoyable and strategic round just outside Charlottesville.

Course Overview

Lake Monticello Golf Course offers an engaging 18-hole challenge set amid the gently rolling hills of Palmyra, Virginia. This public course presents a compelling blend of playability and strategic design, making it suitable for golfers ranging from beginners to more experienced players seeking a round that demands thoughtful shot-making. Fairways wind through a landscape marked by natural elevation changes, requiring careful club selection and course management without overwhelming the mid- to high-handicap player.

The course’s layout capitalizes on its terrain, with the front nine featuring a variety of gently contoured holes that ease players into the round. The back nine introduces increased elevation shifts and tighter fairways, calling for a steady swing and precise approach shots. Bunkers are placed thoughtfully to guard greens and challenge drives, while the greens themselves are maintained to provide consistent yet receptive putting surfaces.

Scenic views over the surrounding countryside enhance the playing experience, with mature trees lining several holes and shaping protected landing zones. While walking is physically demanding, especially on the back nine due to elevation, the course rewards effort with a satisfying test of golf that never feels unfair. Its practice facility stands out with ample short game areas and putting greens, allowing players a full warm-up or a chance to hone their skills after a round.

Located just minutes from Charlottesville, Lake Monticello is easily accessible for locals and visitors alike. The clubhouse provides essential amenities, including a pro shop and casual dining options where players can reflect on their performance amid comfortable surroundings. Golf carts are available but walking remains popular given the overall layout.

Players planning a visit should come prepared for the course’s elevation changes and expect a fair challenge that balances fun with strategic depth. Its mix of wide, forgiving holes and constricted, risk-reward opportunities ensures every round offers fresh challenges. Lake Monticello Golf Course remains a valuable destination for those seeking a well-maintained, approachable track with enough character to keep golfers returning time after time.

Course Highlights

The course features thoughtful bunker placement shaping approach shots and elevated greens that demand precision. The back nine’s elevation changes offer a distinct shift in difficulty, complemented by mature trees framing select fairways. Its extensive practice facilities include separate putting and chipping areas that serve players of all skill levels.

Great course very beautiful!! I just started golf and have been playing with friends to learn the game and get better. Sadly I had a very disappointing in-counter with Tommy Deal, he was very disrespectful and one of the most stuck up people I’ve talked to. I bought range balls not knowing you couldn’t use them on the course. He rudely took the balls from me acting as if I knew I couldn’t use them after telling him I was new to golf. The machine also charged me twice when I chose to pay once. He refused a refund to me and calls the lake police to be his back up. No where on the dispenser did it say I cannot receive a refund if I don’t use the balls, nor did it say anywhere not to use them on the course. He also threatened a ban towards me with false information. Very unprofessional, should have gave me the refund.

Beautiful golf course. Narrow fairways at times but the whole course plays fair to a mid to high handicap like me.

Great course with challenging layout. Decent value. Was not crowded at all. Awesome practice facility with plenty of putting green area and separate chipping/short game area. Challenging to walk, especially the back 9 because of elevation changes but layout flowed easily from hole to hole. Would definitely come back

Super fun and challenging track. Tough to beat for the price especially on a weekend. Conditions are almost perfect from tee to green. Clearly a lot of pride regarding maintenance staff. Would be nice to see them speed up the greens by a foot or two but other than that, 5/5.

The worst golfing experience I have ever had. My family is in from NC and we were expecting to have a fun time. After we were told we could play as a group of 6, Gary Jenifer came up on hole 2 cussing us out saying we could not play as a group of 6. He did not just politely ask us if we could split up. He came up dropping the “F” bomb left and right. It was the most unprofessional way of handling a situation I’ve ever experienced at any establishment. Do not recommend this course at all.

Nice but a little overpriced. Should be in the $55 range for condition it is in.
