Old Course at The Omni Homestead Resort & Spa

Hot Springs, Virginia, USACentral Virginia

The Old Course at The Omni Homestead Resort & Spa offers an 18-hole resort course amid Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, combining classic design with strategic challenges. Its narrow fairways, small greens, and mountain setting create an engaging test for all golfers seeking a traditional yet approachable mountain golf experience.

Course Overview

Set against the rolling contours of Virginia’s Allegheny Mountains, the Old Course at The Omni Homestead Resort & Spa offers an 18-hole golfing experience that blends tradition with strategic challenge. This resort course channels early American golf architecture with a design that demands precision more than power. Its mountain foothill setting provides a rugged backdrop of pines and hardwoods, where elevated tees and greens create subtle but meaningful elevation shifts that influence each shot’s trajectory and club selection.

Fairways are generally narrow, framed by thick rough that punishes wayward drives, making accuracy off the tee essential. The greens, though small, are meticulously maintained and feature subtle breaks that test putting skills at every turn. While not overwhelming in length, the Old Course's combination of tight fairways and compact putting surfaces rewards thoughtful play and course management.

Playability here suits a broad range of golfers. The layout invites mid- and low-handicap players to engage with its strategic elements, while resort guests with varying abilities find it approachable yet never without its moments of exacting demand. The course winds through natural rises and hollows, giving each hole a distinct personality shaped by the surrounding mountain scenery.

The resort setting complements the course with amenities including a fully stocked pro shop and golf instruction facilities. After your round, the clubhouse provides a comfortable space to relax and reflect, with views that stretch across the golf landscape toward the distant Blue Ridge. Carts are readily available, but walking offers the chance to absorb the quiet interplay between terrain and design.

For visitors, early morning tee times can reward you with serene mountain air and minimal wind interference, although conditions may include morning dew due to elevation. Proper footwear is recommended for those opting to walk, as some slopes require firm footing.

The Old Course’s enduring character at The Omni Homestead Resort enriches Virginia golf with a blend of history, natural beauty, and thoughtfully laid-out holes that invite a measured approach to every shot under a canopy of mountain skies.

Course Highlights

This historic mountain course is one of America’s oldest golf layouts still in continuous use, showcasing six par 3s, six par 4s, and six par 5s. Key features include well-maintained small greens demanding precision approach shots, narrow fairways bordered by thick rough, and elevation changes that require thoughtful club selection. Scenic views of the resort and mountain ranges enhance the playing experience without overshadowing the course’s strategic identity.

Exactly what you'd expect at a resort mountain course. Small greens, thick rough and everything in near manicured condition. Excellent staff. Great golf carts. I'm not a morning person but came on a 25th anniversary trip with the wife so I teed off first player so I could be back by the time she decided to get out of bed. I dont know how to and dont like playing in morning dew and the constant swarm of knots but for other golfers I'm sure they love it. A couple great views of the resort. The ups and downs weren't extremely challenging but just enough to make your club choice important. Greens are PGA quality, just small. As in 25 yards total kind of size. Fairways maintained very well as well as cart path. The rough is kept but it was about 6 inches thick. Fairways are an average of 40 yards wide. The challenge here is small greens, thin Fairways and thick rough. You'd think more highs and lows but that's not the challenge here. Worth about $85 being a resort. Don't pay the $200+ rack rate. The Old Course at the Homestead is one of the finest mountain courses in Virginia and one of the best public courses as well. The staff show the finest hospitality that I’ve ever encountered and make you feel welcome during the round. The course itself is a shorter and older layout but is no pushover by any means. The course has small and severely undulating greens that are lightning fast and fairways that are severely sloping resulting in very few even lies. The conditions of the course are immaculate and make for an enjoyable day of golf for all skill levels.

One of the most peaceful places 🥰. It has alot of fun and energetic activities, we tried the zip line, shooting and kayaking and all of them were good. The pool is clean and they have kids area. I am giving 4 stars though, Because some of the furniture was not very clean and because it became more expensive.

Amazing course and worth the greens fees. The views were amazing the lies not so much hahaha. This course was very challenging. I played 27 holes here over our vacation. The staff was awesome. They took care of my clubs from the time I arrived until I checked out. You need to give this course a play!

Pleasure teeing off at Americas oldest tee in continous use. Amazing views from every hole, with the mountains in the backdrop and view of the Old Himstead. The 6 par 3s, par 4s and par 5s are a nice touch. Stop by the pro shop and say hello to the GM Mark, and the rest of the team.
