Course Overview
Located just a short drive from Forest, Virginia, Colonial Hills Golf Club offers an approachable yet engaging golf experience across its 18 holes. This public course presents a well-balanced layout that harmonizes with the surrounding Piedmont landscape, featuring gently rolling hills and lush fairways that require thoughtful shot placement without overwhelming less experienced players. The course design supports a player-friendly approach, catering to a wide range of skill levels while still offering strategic challenges for more advanced golfers.
Fairways at Colonial Hills are notably forgiving, allowing golfers to recover from errant shots, while the green complexes respond well to well-executed approaches, encouraging precision and creativity around the pins. Though the course’s signage has been noted as an area needing improvement, recent upgrades to the fleet of carts—equipped with GPS units showing yardages and hole layouts—help mitigate navigation issues, enhancing pace of play and overall enjoyment.
The conditioning is a consistent highlight, particularly the greens, which remain smooth and true throughout the season. Tee boxes show steady care, though some players have mentioned room for improvement. The gentle elevation changes and natural contours of the course offer subtle visual relief, supporting a steady rhythm of play across holes that flow comfortably from one to the next.
Golfers will appreciate the welcoming atmosphere fostered by the friendly staff and a well-stocked pro shop supplying equipment, apparel, and accessories to fit diverse needs. Amenities include new golf carts and accessible practice facilities, making Colonial Hills a practical destination for both casual outings and skill development.
Players planning a visit should prepare for limited directional signage onsite, relying instead on cart GPS or staff guidance to navigate. The course’s walkability is moderate; given the terrain, supportive footwear is advised for those who prefer to explore the course on foot. Colonial Hills Golf Club stands out as an affordable, enjoyable venue, blending solid course design with attentive service to deliver satisfying rounds within a relaxed Virginia golf setting.
Course Highlights
Colonial Hills blends natural Piedmont terrain with a forgiving yet strategic layout, highlighted by smooth greens and expansive fairways. Very impressed!!! It was my first time playing the course and my experience was very good. Great rates for 18 holes with a cart, and speaking of the cart they have very nice brand new carts with screens showing gps and distances (which I didn’t get to try because they were fresh to the course)! The staff was super helpful and friendly. The pro shop was stocked full of amazing gear and even carrying some Good Good apparel which I thought was neat. Out on the course that greens were very well kept and not to mention the beautiful scenic views everywhere! The course has great holes really keeping the course fresh and enjoyable! Yes the lack of signage did throw me off but I wonder if the new cart gps will help with that. Overall very enjoyable and I will be back!

All around enjoyable course. Forgiving fairways, and a nice variety of challenging holes. However, the tee boxers and cart paths both need work. Like others, I also found the hole signage terrible, which is basically nonexistent. I got turned around several times and had to ask other golfers for directions. Unfortunately I won’t play here again unless that is fixed. I’ve played for a long time on courses all over the country, and I’ve never seen a course with no signage for the direction of the holes or the distance information, etc.

Great layout. Lacks directional signage on course and can be confusing. Great staff.

So solid. Staff is all friendly, fees are super affordable, and the course gives nice variety. I've seen the course come in nicely from March to now. Fairways are A, greens A+, tee boxes B-, all of that shapes up for a great time on the course. My ONLY gripe, not enough directional signage... My first time on course I accidentally made a 700 yd par 5 by teeing off on 7 tee box, to 16 fairway/green, when I was going for hole 2 lol.
