Essex Country Club

Essex Junction, Vermont, USACentral Vermont

Essex Country Club offers an approachable 18-hole private course set amid Vermont’s tranquil woodlands. With a par 72 layout designed for both strategic play and relaxed rounds, it welcomes golfers seeking balance between challenge and enjoyment in a friendly environment.

Course Overview

Essex Country Club presents an 18-hole golfing experience that balances challenge with accessibility on Vermont’s northern edge. Situated in Essex Junction, this private course unfolds across gently rolling terrain, blending well-maintained fairways with the region’s natural woodlands. The layout encourages a varied style of play, rewarding thoughtful shot-making rather than brute distance. Players encounter a conventional but thoughtfully designed course where each hole offers a distinct personality, framed by mature trees that define the corridor and influence shot selection throughout the round.

The course plays to a par of 72 with total yardage around 6,400 yards from the back tees. It's designed to suit a broad range of players—from mid to low handicappers—providing both strategic challenges and enjoyable options for casual rounds. Greens are generally receptive and true, although certain areas may require a slightly careful approach, especially on days when maintenance varies. Bunkers and hazards are present but not overly punitive; errant shots find trouble mostly in limited spots rather than across the entire round.

Essex Country Club maintains a welcoming atmosphere that contrasts with some of Vermont’s more exclusive golf venues. The staff's friendly demeanor contributes to a relaxed environment where members and guests alike can focus on the enjoyment of the game without the pressure sometimes found at private courses. The clubhouse, while modest, provides essential amenities and serves as a gathering spot before or after rounds.

For golfers who prefer walking, the course offers a manageable pace and terrain with firm footing, although sturdy shoes are advisable given variable ground conditions throughout the seasons. Pull carts are permitted, and golf carts are available upon request, but walking remains common among members.

Though not a flashy destination nor a renowned architectural landmark, Essex Country Club's straightforward layout and Vermont charm create an inviting setting for golfers looking to blend competitive play with casual enjoyment. The course fits well into Central Vermont’s golfing landscape, offering a solid option where the game is valued as much for camaraderie as for competition.

Im shocked this course doesn’t have better reviews! I love it so much I bought a sweatshirt. The course itself is beautiful and has been in great condition every time I’ve been and the employees are always friendly. One time someone gave me a sparkly pink ball. The carts are well-loved but they work fine. This course is very much my vibe. It’s not stuffy and I have a good time every time.

No stars, called to report damage from a fly ball as I drove past, this place (Ralph specifically) will take no responsibility for my shattered windshield, or the glass shards now covering my dash and front seat.

We played today in spite of the bad reviews and had a great time! The fairways are fine, the greens have a few bad spots but not terrible. The bunkers are awful so just take a drop outside the bunker. Don't let the bad reviews discourage you. It's a great course.

This course is awesome! Great hole designs and the fairways and greens are kept in great condition. Don't be fooled by the low reviews this is a golf course for people who want to get out on the course with a couple beers and play not for the members of high society in clubhouse who play twice a year you get at the "nicer" courses.
