The Course at Sewanee
The Course at Sewanee offers a compact yet intricate nine-hole layout perched on the Cumberland Plateau. Balancing elevation shifts and risk-reward design, this Gil Hanse-refurbished course invites players of varied skill levels to engage with its natural terrain and thoughtful strategy.
Course Overview
The Course at Sewanee presents a compelling blend of challenge and charm across its distinctive nine holes, set atop the Tennessee plateau. While compact in length, it offers a diverse and richly varied golf experience framed by natural ridges, gentle elevation changes, and panoramic vistas that stretch across the Cumberland Plateau. This Gil Hanse-refurbished layout skillfully balances risk and reward, inviting both keen amateurs and seasoned players to test their precision and strategic thinking.
Play begins on holes that demand thoughtful club selection and shot placement, with uphill and downhill segments that influence ball flight and stance. On the par-3 eighth hole, the course reveals one of its unique demands: an uphill tee shot of 165 yards that can feel markedly longer when the plateau’s steady breezes factor in. Meanwhile, some short par-4s offer tempting risk-reward choices for those tempted to challenge strategic carry zones or narrow fairways guarded by sand traps.
The terrain flows naturally, crafting each hole’s personality without feeling forced. Bunkers are carefully positioned to guard approaches and greens, prompting mindful navigation. The greens themselves exhibit moderate undulation and offer ample opportunities for shot-shaping and approach accuracy. The course walks briskly, making for an enjoyable rhythm that encourages focus without fatigue.
Located at 444 Green’s View Rd, The Course at Sewanee operates with a friendly and attentive staff, cultivating an atmosphere that is as welcoming as it is professional. Though modest in scale, the pro shop and practice areas are well maintained, and the clubhouse provides a relaxed gathering spot post-round. Golfers should be aware that the dining options are limited and may not align precisely with menu descriptions, suggesting that players plan accordingly.
Ideal for players seeking an engaging round with a variety of shot-making challenges, The Course at Sewanee rewards careful play and creative tactics. Its blend of natural scenery, varied hole designs, and refreshing mountain air make it a noteworthy destination for anyone exploring Central Tennessee golf.
Course Highlights
This nine-hole course stands out for its clever incorporation of natural plateau contours and ridge lines, creating strategic uphill and downhill shots uncommon in many public layouts. Gil Hanse's renovation refines the balance between accessible playability and intricate shot-making. Noteworthy are the par-4 holes that present risk-reward options and the challenging uphill par-3 eighth, which tests distance control in variable wind conditions. We’d go to school here based on the quality of the course at Sewanee alone! What a setting!?! Wow. What a treat this ridge top gem is to play and for bargain prices IMO. Wonderful staff and facilities all around. Nothing not to like. Cliffside holes get the press but par 4 8th is one of greatest par 4s in golf. Gil Hanse public courses don’t grow as on trees. Play it

This course is, as said by multiple people in my party, a hidden gem. I visited with a group of PGA professionals and they had a great time playing the course as scratch golfers. Each hole had a different unexpected layout. I played from the forward tees and as a girl had trouble on one of the par 3s which was playing 165 yards uphill with the wind-quite the challenge, yet I also had a driveable par-4. Overall we loved the course and pro shop area, but I had some issues in the bar/restaurant area. Obviously it is a small place so they don’t have everything, but I ordered the “Superfood Salad” and I got something entirely different. There was no arugula (instead iceberg lettuce), no avacado, and quinoa seemed half cooked. They added in grapes, day old pineapple, watermelon, and melon chunks- clearly from a fruit salad platter. This was NOT on the menu and if I would have known this is what I was getting, I would have not ordered it at all. I am allergic to both grapes and pineapple so this was not appreciated. I am still giving 5 stars for the golf course but noting that restaurant needs a simpler menu & some extra help

This might be the best golf experience I've had in a while. From Matt at the front desk to the driving range to the immaculate putting and chipping greens to the bar - and I haven't even mentioned the course yet. This Gil Hanse-refurbished 9-hole track is a complete joy, managing to hit that sweet spot so beloved of Alistair McKenzie - to be both challenging to the better player and fun for the deep amateur. Practice putting before you start. I was on the first hole, a par 5, in regulation - only to four-putt. The turf was so springy, the air so breezy and light, that I did not care one bit.

The course is in great shape. They are still working on a few bunkers, but overall, as a nine hole course, this is a must play. Very friendly staff. Can't wait to go back.
