Tom O'Leary Golf Course in Bismarck presents an engaging 18-hole experience, combining rolling hills, tree-lined fairways, and a tranquil arboretum setting. This public course offers a fair but strategic test for golfers of all abilities, with well maintained greens and a thoughtful layout that rewards precision.

Course Overview

Tom O'Leary Golf Course offers a compelling blend of natural landscape and thoughtful design, presenting 18 holes that challenge and reward golfers across all skill levels. Located in Bismarck, North Dakota, this public course occupies a rolling terrain highlighted by a mix of open fairways and tree-lined corridors. The undulating hills provide a dynamic setting where every shot invites strategic thinking, especially on the front nine with its generous fairways that run through gentle rises. The course flows around an arboretum and alongside a creek, which adds a subtle layer of complexity and visual interest, particularly on the back nine.

Players will find the layout approachable yet engaging. The greens are well maintained and consistent, though some are strategically slow, demanding steady putting strokes and an understanding of subtle breaks. Elevated tees and greens enhance the play experience by introducing elevation changes that affect club selection and shot execution. The natural slopes around the course influence ball roll and positioning, so precision in approach shots is rewarded.

Hole 8 stands out as a favorite among many visitors, providing a quiet challenge framed by natural features that invite focus and careful shot-making. The back nine’s routing near water hazards and distinctive holes with varied distances encourages golfers to balance risk and reward, making for an entertaining finish.

Tom O'Leary is known for its scenic walking trails that weave through the course and arboretum, inviting players to enjoy the surroundings. Given the course’s hilly nature, a cart is recommended for those less accustomed to walking terrain that includes significant elevation changes. The clubhouse maintains a clean and welcoming atmosphere, though golf equipment options and snack selections are limited, so visitors should plan accordingly.

The course draws a mix of solo players and groups, supported by a responsive pro shop that accommodates a range of tee time requests. It books up rapidly in season, so early planning is key. For those seeking a challenging yet fair test within the Bismarck area, Tom O'Leary provides a refreshing balance of natural beauty, strategic variety, and solid facilities.

Course Highlights

The course’s rolling topography features elevated tees and greens that influence shot strategy, particularly on the front nine. The arboretum and creek on the back nine enrich the natural setting and add water hazards that test golfer accuracy. Hole 8 is a standout for its quiet, secluded feel and challenging layout. The track balances wide fairways with tighter, wooded sections that demand both length and precision.

What an enjoyable, challenging, and welcoming course. It's a busy course with lots of groups, but the pro shop is also able to work on singles. The front nine is full of rolling hills and generous fairways. I recommend a cart if you aren't accustomed to hiking up hills. Watch your slopes, as they are dramatic and affect your roll out. Hole 8, my favorite, is secluded and a fun challenge. You'll lose fewer balls on the front nine than the back, with more water hazards and out of the way back tee boxes. The back 9 plays around the pretty arboretum and across the creek. Watch for wildlife, especially on hole 16 near the center of the course. A good, fun course and a great value!

Good use of hills with elevated tees and greens. Greens were a little slow, but very consistent and well maintained. Fairways were consistent. Teeboxes were having some trouble with invasive grasses and it was difficult to find a level area. Cart paths could use some repair. Clubhouse was very clean, but very little golf equipment or snack options. A few holes are weird distances and required layups or big gambles.

Fun scenic course. Was impressed with how quickly it played. There are some nice walking trails on the course and an Arboretum.

When I was there for around of golf. It was great. The course is well kept up. All the greens are full and not patchy. The staff are all very friendly and willing to assist with all of your needs. call at least a week ahead for your Tee Times. They book up pretty fast in season.

I really enjoyed the course. We'll groomed, and the greens were challenging but not insane. Would have liked to see the beverage cart more often tho.
