Links At Sierra Blanca

Ruidoso, New Mexico, USACentral New Mexico

Links At Sierra Blanca offers an 18-hole Scottish links-style experience framed by the Sierra Blanca mountains. This public course blends strategic play with inviting scenery and features unexpected wildlife encounters, making it a memorable destination for golfers of all levels.

Course Overview

Situated on the historic grounds of the former Ruidoso airport, Links At Sierra Blanca invites golfers to experience a refreshing blend of traditional Scottish links-style golf set against the striking backdrop of New Mexico’s Sierra Blanca mountains. This 18-hole public course stretches over 6,800 yards from the back tees, challenging players with undulating fairways and firm, fast greens that encourage thoughtful shot placement and creative course management.

The course’s broad expanses of fescue and native grasses create a parkland/links hybrid feel, where variable winds often test a golfer’s timing and trajectory decisions. Rolling terrain shifts subtly throughout the round, opening vistas of rugged mountain peaks that frame the experience without overwhelming play. Wildlife frequently crosses fairways, with wild horses and elk occasionally visible, lending an earthy authenticity that deepens each outing.

Designed for golfers who appreciate a strategic layout that rewards accuracy over brute power, Links At Sierra Blanca suits a wide skill range. The fairways remain forgiving enough for mid-handicap players, while the challenging green complexes and natural hazards beckon low handicappers seeking to sharpen their short game. The pace of play tends to flow smoothly, supported by attentive course staff who prioritize condition and hospitality.

A modest but inviting clubhouse serves up classic amenities, including a well-stocked pro shop and casual dining options where players can unwind and recount highlights after their round. Seasonal twilight rates offer value-driven opportunities to enjoy the course under shifting desert skies. Maintenance standards reflect a serious commitment to quality, evidenced in the clean, lush tee boxes and receptive greens.

For planning your visit, prepare for variable mountain weather and bring versatile footwear suited for walking links-style terrain. The unique landscape and carefully cultivated course conditions combine to make Links At Sierra Blanca a distinctive stop for golfers exploring Central New Mexico. This course balances character and playability with a sense of place that stays with you long after the final putt.

Course Highlights

Links At Sierra Blanca is distinguished by its authentic Scottish-inspired design blending fescue-lined fairways with open, rolling terrain. The course’s signature challenge lies in mastering the winds and firm green complexes. Wildlife sightings, including wild horses and elk, add a natural element rarely found on desert courses. The setting on a former airport site adds a subtle layer of historical intrigue that complements the landscape’s rugged beauty.

Absolutely beautiful course. They lowered the prices to $90 and if that's to much, go play the twilight hours at 4pm in the summer for $32. The layout is awesome and the wildlife is gorgeous. If you are easily inconvenienced then maybe a pack of wild horses next to the fairway may not be your thing, but slowly driving up to them is enough to get them to disburse. The greens were close to perfect and the fairways and tee boxes were well cared for. Will definitely be playing this course again.

I have played this course many, many times over the years. The course is beautifully designed with a classic Scottish links style, set against the stunning backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains. The layout is both challenging and enjoyable. You would never know this used to be the location of the Ruidoso airport. Beautiful views of the mountains and lots of wildlife here, even wild horses. The course conditions were top-notch. The fairways were lush and well-maintained. It’s clear that a lot of care goes into keeping this course in excellent shape. The staff were friendly and accommodating. One of the highlights was the unique setting of the course, which offers a refreshing change from typical desert courses. The clubhouse is cozy and well-equipped, providing a nice spot to relax after a round. The little snack shake has great hot dogs and sandwiches.

Best bang for your buck in southern NM. Greens are pure, and the course is hard. Jim in the pro shop is the man. Back 9 makes this course legendary!

The best valued golf course I think I have ever played in my entire life. We saw horses, elk, and the greens are pure. The back 9 was surreal and Jim was the man super welcoming. Best time I’ve had in awhile on the links.

First time playing the course. Fun layout, but not nearly worth the $125 price ($135 after taxes). - Cups had not been cut in what looked like a couple of days. - Greens had not healed from previous aerification. Very bumpy. - Tee boxes not set in level positions. - No beer license/not allowed to BYOB. Empty cans all over the course. In general, the course is not in great shape, even for off-season.
