University of New Mexico Golf Course

Albuquerque, New Mexico, USACentral New Mexico

The University of New Mexico Golf Course blends approachable championship golf with the distinctive high desert landscape of Albuquerque. This 18-hole public course challenges players with open fairways, subtle elevation changes, and a layout suited for golfers across all experience levels.

Course Overview

Located within the vibrant city of Albuquerque, the University of New Mexico Golf Course offers a compelling challenge embedded in an urban setting. This 18-hole championship layout weaves through gently rolling terrain typical of New Mexico’s high desert landscape, presenting a golfing experience that balances strategic demands with scenic openness. The course’s broad fairways accommodate players of various skill levels, while well-placed bunkers and natural elevation shifts invite thoughtful shot-making, rewarding precision without overwhelming casual golfers.

As a public facility operated by the university, the course maintains an approachable character, welcoming everyone from beginners to low handicappers seeking a competitive test. The arid climate and wide-open vistas create an inviting atmosphere year-round, and players often find themselves navigating light winds that subtly influence ball flight. Expansive greens allow for creative approach shots, making putting both an exercise in touch and tactical reading.

The practice facilities support skill development with a driving range and putting greens, essential for warming up before a round or polishing short game skills afterward. The clubhouse, modest yet welcoming, serves as a hub where players can unwind with refreshments and enjoy views of the course across University Boulevard.

Despite being a bustling venue with frequent play, the course’s layout encourages a steady pace, and those visiting should plan tee times ahead to navigate potential wait times during peak periods. Walking the course is feasible, aided by gentle elevation changes and well-maintained cart paths, but comfortable shoes are recommended given the dry climate.

This layout satisfies players seeking a course that combines accessible playability with moments of strategic depth. Its distinctive Southwestern setting and straightforward design provide an engaging link between city life and the game of golf, making the University of New Mexico Golf Course a fitting destination for both locals and visitors aiming to put their game to the test amid classic high-desert scenery.

Course Highlights

The course offers wide fairways framed by the high desert’s natural brush and rock formations, while subtle elevation shifts and well-positioned bunkers introduce strategic decisions. Its urban location provides dramatic views of Albuquerque’s cityscape and distant Sandia Mountains. Known for a friendly atmosphere and solid course conditions, it appeals broadly from recreational players to competitive amateurs.

Starter was leaning towards unfriendly. Everything else was perfect. Lobo grill attendant was awesome, course was in as good of condition as could be in winter.

My son and I had a great experience playing the Championship Course last week. The course was in very good shape and the staff was exceptional. Adam Roybal, the GM, was very helpful in locating the rangefinder I left in one of the carts. We'll be back, for sure!

The Northeast Seniors Golf Association (NESGA) held a tournament today at UNM South and the course is in great shape. Its a tough, challenging course, but also a lot of fun to play.

Enjoyed my first visit to this course, overall! Easy-going staff and easy to book. Range was set back to low quality mats which was too bad, and the practice greens didn’t have pins while I was up there. The course was seemingly overbooked as there were three playing groups waiting on each hole most the time: tee box, fairway, green. Made for a slow round but would play here again.
