Lakewood Country Club

Lakewood, New Jersey, USACentral New Jersey

Lakewood Country Club delivers a straightforward parkland layout featuring wide fairways and receptive greens that accommodate all skill levels. A well-maintained public course in Central New Jersey, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with subtle strategic challenges and a welcoming environment for casual and improving golfers alike.

Course Overview

Lakewood Country Club offers an approachable yet engaging golf experience ideal for players seeking a solid layout with a balance of challenge and playability. This 18-hole public course, located just off Country Club Drive in Lakewood, New Jersey, presents a traditional parkland style gently folding over wide fairways and well-maintained greens. The design emphasizes straightforward shot-making with occasional risk-reward elements, making it accessible for beginners while still offering enough nuance to test mid and high handicappers.

Set in a quiet suburban environment, the course’s broad fairways open up to an inviting landscape that encourages aggressive play off the tee. Greens are generally receptive but can demand a sharp touch with their subtle contours, rewarding precision over power. The layout does not rely on extreme elevation changes or sprawling hazards; instead, it challenges golfers with carefully placed bunkers and strategic doglegs that require course management and thoughtful club selection.

Visitors will notice the course’s solid conditioning, especially in mid-season months when the turf is at its healthiest. While some early-season rounds may find the course recovering from winter maintenance, the fairways and greens quickly respond to warmer weather, enhancing overall playability. The pace of play is typically relaxed, and the environment supports a casual round, though the more competitive player will find opportunities to sharpen their short game and putting.

Cart paths are present but some wear can be expected in the spring. Walking the course is manageable for those prepared with sturdy shoes, though players opting for carts will appreciate the convenience in hot or humid conditions. A well-stocked concession stand midway provides welcome refreshment, contributing to a comfortable outing.

Lakewood Country Club does not carry the private club air but is valued for its straightforward fairness, friendly staff, and value for money. This is a course suited for local golf outings, casual rounds with friends, or players looking for consistent conditions and an inviting test without the intimidation of overly complex architecture. Thoughtful course design and open sightlines make it a solid choice for golfers who prioritize steady improvement in a relaxed setting.

Course Highlights

The course is characterized by broad, open fairways and relatively flat terrain, making it approachable for players at all levels. Bunkers are strategically positioned to guard key landing zones and greens, demanding thoughtful shot placement. While lacking major elevation shifts, a handful of holes require tactical decisions around risk and reward, enhancing the overall playability. The well-maintained greens stand out for their responsiveness and subtle undulations, where putting touch can make a significant difference.

Course was in great shape. Conditions were hot and humid. Golf Now made it simple to book our "hot deal" which was $55 which is a decent rate for a midweek afternoon day in June. The only downside was the staff. We arrived at the course early because we decided to patronize a local business for lunch. Well, much to our dismay, we were denied early access to our cart because we were Golf Now "hot deal" customers! Most golf courses encourage early arrivals to ensure tee times are maintained. I am not sure how permitting us to access a cart early impacts the bottom line.

Tough course at times when you cant hit it straight. The course is in great shape where some of the greens are like walking on a carpet. Good place for the money. Play here a few times a year. The have a great concession stand at the turn. Fully stockes.

Went golfing there this morning, alright course. It is April so in good shape for April. Some strange holes, somewhat scenic, not extremely difficult. Not my first choice in course in the area but would return, definitely not a country club feel. Worth going to once but not a course I’m dying to play again. Staff is very friendly.

It's a quiet spot but not in great shape. I know it's early in the year and maybe it'll get better once the weather warms. Cart paths weren't great, thatching all over the course. Still getting ready for the season it seems. Holes were wide open though, which was good for a casual golfer. Couple of really nice holes too, tried to take pics. So some good, some bad. We'll definitely go back since we're not picky.
