Plainfield Country Club

Edison, New Jersey, USACentral New Jersey

Plainfield Country Club delivers a refined private golf experience with an 18-hole parkland-style layout that challenges precision and strategy. Mature trees, well-placed bunkers, and receptive greens combine to create a course that suits a wide spectrum of golfers in Central New Jersey.

Course Overview

Located just a short drive from Edison, New Jersey, Plainfield Country Club offers golfers an 18-hole private championship course that balances tradition with challenge. The course carries the hallmarks of a classic parkland layout, featuring lush fairways lined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed bunkers that demand thoughtful shot-making. This setting creates a calm yet focused environment where wind plays a subtler role than many coastal courses but still tests timing on approach shots.

Plainfield’s routing rewards players who value precision over power. The greens tend to be large and receptive, with subtle undulations that require careful reading to navigate successfully. Elevated tee boxes provide captivating views across the gently rolling terrain, and water hazards appear sparingly but with impact, reinforcing strategic decisions especially on the back nine. Each hole encourages a balance of risk and reward, making the round engaging for golfers across many skill levels.

The course’s playability is designed to welcome a diverse membership, from low handicaps looking for a stern test to intermediate players aiming to improve their scoring consistency. The overall conditioning reflects a commitment to quality, with closely mown fairways and well-maintained putting surfaces contributing to a smooth pace of play.

Plainfield Country Club is more than its layout. The clubhouse serves as an elegant hub for members, featuring dining facilities and locker rooms that blend comfort with understated style. Walking the course is both feasible and traditional; the terrain is forgiving, making it a pleasant journey on foot, though carts are available.

Situated in Central New Jersey’s competitive golf landscape, Plainfield stands out by marrying classic design elements with a welcoming yet exclusive atmosphere. For those fortunate enough to play here, the experience is a blend of thoughtful strategy, natural beauty, and friendly camaraderie that defines private club golf at its best.

Course Highlights

Plainfield Country Club’s parkland design emphasizes tree-lined fairways and carefully placed bunkers that challenge approach shots and course management. The back nine features subtle elevation changes and water hazards that call for precise shot selection. Its enduring appeal lies in the balance of a true championship layout with approachable playability for a diverse membership.

As an Invited Gold member and long-time club member, I’ve had great experiences at many Invited properties—especially The Heights Golf Club just 10 minutes away, where the staff was welcoming and supportive. Unfortunately, my experience at Shadowridge was very different. We were in town for a major junior tournament, and I simply asked if we could use the range and putting green. At most Invited clubs, the staff usually offers a solution or finds a way to make it work—especially for juniors. Instead, I spoke with two separate staff members and felt like we were being run off the property. It was frustrating and a bit embarrassing. I wasn’t asking to play—just hoping for a reasonable solution. I hope the club can do better going forward.

I don’t know about golfing, but as a wedding venue it’s a good place. The food is alright, and the staff is overall helpful, except for a couple of them. There were two coordinators, and somehow they disappeared without saying a word to the bride or the groom, which is rather unprofessional. Other that though they made sure everything went as smoothly as possible. Everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. By the way, their WiFi is really good, unlike other golf club wedding venues that I have been. I have been to many, and this one was a pleasant surprise.

Overall, I've been treated pretty decently by the Pro Shop staff and restaurant folks. However, I regrettably left a sand wedge iron on the #2 hole green's edges. It hasn't been turned in yet, and I haven't gotten it back either. Geez, it's over 20 years used (the wedge club)!

Played here as part of Golf Moose’s Member for a day event. The facilities are very nice, and the fairways were in good condition. The bunkers were not in prime condition, and the greens were fairly average. The course is nice enough, but there really isn’t anything special about it. There weren’t really any holes that stood out.
