Plainfield Country Club

Edison, New Jersey, USACentral New Jersey

Plainfield Country Club offers a private, 18-hole parkland course that combines classic design with playability suited for a broad range of golfers. Its rolling fairways, guarded greens, and mature trees create a gently challenging environment framed by a traditional clubhouse and strong walking culture.

Course Overview

Plainfield Country Club presents a commanding example of classic American golf, combining tradition with serious playability in Central New Jersey. This private, 18-hole championship course challenges members with a thoughtfully maintained layout that balances strategic complexity and engaging variety. Its parkland setting stretches across gently rolling terrain lined with mature trees, creating natural corridors that reward precision off the tee. Though the course demands focus, it remains approachable for golfers improving their game, offering multiple tees that provide a range of yardages and angles.

The experience at Plainfield is defined by its carefully sculpted fairways and bunkers that guard each green with quiet insistence. Water hazards appear intermittently, forcing thoughtful club selection, without overwhelming less experienced players. The routing takes golfers through distinct landscapes within the property, shifting seamlessly between wooded stretches and open vistas that catch sunlight in ways that highlight subtle changes in elevation and green contours.

Members benefit from a clubhouse that blends classic design with modern conveniences, housing dining areas that overlook the course and facilities tailored for both relaxation and competition. The club maintains a strong walking tradition, encouraging players to connect directly with the course’s rhythms and terrain. Walking is recommended, with sturdy shoes advised, as some hills add variety to the overall round.

Given its private status, access requires membership or an invitation, ensuring a measured pace of play and a quality experience free of crowd-induced distractions. The course supports players looking to sharpen their skills and those who prize golf’s intricate balance of skill, strategy, and natural beauty. Seasonal conditions fluctuate moderately through New Jersey’s typical weather patterns, so planning play during spring through fall offers the smoothest turf and most comfortable surroundings.

Plainfield Country Club is defined by its commitment to classic golf fundamentals and an environment that fosters both challenge and enjoyment. By blending well-maintained parkland characteristics with a thoughtful routing that embraces the local topography, it rewards players ready to engage fully with their game every time they tee off.

Course Highlights

Among its defining traits, Plainfield’s well-positioned bunkers and subtly contoured greens demand precision approach shots. The course’s layout takes advantage of natural undulations while offering contrasting settings from quieter wooded areas to broader, sunlit openings. The clubhouse serves as a social hub, complementing the course with quality amenities that support a full day of golf and relaxation.

We did the 17 mile Dr during our trip to Monterey/Pacific Grove and it was the best part of the trip. You can't miss this if you come here!

What a privilege it was to play here. Paul is a great caddie and saved my skin on multiple green reads. Everyone asks “how’d you do on 16?” and I can proudly say I hit driver, made it over and got up and down for par. An experience of a lifetime I won’t ever forget!

Incredibly gorgeous golf course and surroundings. Rustic locker room and pro shop. Head pro, Casey Reamer, is simply a class act. Food is only for members and their guests. Can't wait to play it again!

My favorite course in the world. If you get an invite take it. This is the pinnacle of MacKenzie's abilities. I love the transition between the different zones of the course: dunes, Monterey pines, Cypress forest, coastal cliffs.

Nice golf club and nice facility. Just member only rules is a little too inconvenient.
