Northland Country Club
Northland Country Club is an 18-hole private course along Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, featuring a classic Donald Ross design restored to its original complexity. With rolling fairways, challenging greens, and lake-influenced winds, it offers a rewarding experience for golfers seeking a traditional test steeped in natural beauty.
Course Overview
Located along the rugged shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, Northland Country Club offers an 18-hole private course that challenges and engages players of all abilities. Originally designed by Donald Ross, one of golf’s most revered architects, the course showcases his signature use of strategic shot placement and subtle ground contours. After a thoughtful restoration aimed at returning the layout to Ross’s original vision, Northland demands accuracy from tee to green with optical illusions and finely contoured putting surfaces that test both nerves and skill.
The landscape is defined by rolling fairways framed by mature trees and occasional glimpses of Superior’s deep blue waters. While not a traditional links-style course, the proximity to the lake introduces wind as a quiet adversary, requiring players to adjust their club selection and ball flight against shifting breezes. The greens are fast and cleverly tiered, with slopes that reward precise reads and smooth touch, making putting one of the course’s defining challenges.
Playability runs the gamut from the strategic use of shorter irons off the tee on some holes to demanding long approaches, catering particularly to intermediate and better golfers who appreciate subtle complexity. Walking Northland is encouraged, offering an intimate connection with the natural contours and elevation changes that shape every shot. The grounds remain consistently well-maintained under the careful stewardship of the head superintendent, ensuring fairways hold firm and greens roll true, even through seasonal transitions.
The clubhouse overlooks the course and lake, providing a comfortable setting to relax after your round. While the food service has room for refinement, the dining experience benefits from its panoramic views and quiet ambiance. Northland stands as a distinguished golf destination in Central Minnesota, blending historic design, natural beauty, and a thoughtful test of golf that leaves a lasting impression. Visitors will find it an experience grounded in respect for tradition with a playing challenge that rewards patience and precision.

The most challenging greens I've tried to read in MN, the clock guide was challenging to try and decipher. Can't wait to play it a 2nd time, definitely a few holes where an iron off the tee takes trouble out of reach. Backdrop views of superior were breathtaking

We played 18 holes on a Friday afternoon in the fall. Prior to starting the round, we received a brief education from the course superintendent about the style of the course's creator, Mr. Donald Ross. Optical illusions abound on the course: a few infinity greens with some holes playing longer than they appear while others played shorter. Putting requires an accurate read with a deft touch, even on a wet fall day that reminded us of rounds played along Oregon's Pacific Coast. The course's ranking by Golf Digest as one of Minnesota's best is well earned.

PERPLEXED, I believe is the correct term for my first visit to Northland Country Club. Trust your feet and never your eyes on the greens was the advice that held the most weight by an employee. These greens are the most challenging in Minnesota, but are in perfect shape so if you guess right a putt could see the bottom of the cup. Jake, the superintendent, has this place looking immaculate even through a remodel back to its original design. It’d be a privilege to have the opportunity to play this course again. Until next time!

Always great food, never a wait. We were the only people in the entire restaurant for lunch. Can see the golf course easily from the patio or inside from most tables. High prices for small portions. Definitely Paying for the outside view. Not saying the food is lacking, it's not, but the interior could use some sprucing up/deep cleaning/updates.
