Rocky Point Golf Course

Essex, Maryland, USACentral Maryland

Rocky Point Golf Course in Essex, Maryland, delivers an 18-hole public layout with a traditional design and scenic waterfront setting. Its approachable fairways and large greens balance challenge and playability, making it an inviting venue for golfers of all levels seeking a coastal round with affordable access.

Course Overview

Rocky Point Golf Course, situated along the waterfront in Essex, Maryland, offers an 18-hole public layout that embraces classic design principles with a refreshing daily accessibility. The course stretches just over 6,300 yards from the back tees, par 72, presenting a balanced test for golfers ranging from beginners to seasoned players looking for a steady challenge. Its flat terrain, punctuated by generous fairways and large greens, invites a measured approach while the occasional wind sweeping in from the nearby Back River adds an unpredictable element to shot selection.

Set against a backdrop of open sky and shifting water views, Rocky Point delivers a calm yet invigorating atmosphere. The maritime setting contributes to a refreshing cooling breeze that interacts with a variety of holes, particularly the par 4s and 5s, which demand strategic clubbing. Bunkers are thoughtfully positioned to protect the well-maintained putting surfaces rather than to punish indiscriminately, fostering playability across skill levels.

This course is notable for its straightforward layout that emphasizes shot control and course management over forced risk-taking. While the greens tend to run slower during cooler periods, their size and contouring require precision on approach shots. Wildlife frequently interrupts play in the most welcomed way: herons, ospreys, and eagles can often be observed, lending a touch of natural theater to the round.

Operated as a budget-friendly public venue, Rocky Point offers the essentials needed for a comfortable outing, including a clubhouse with basic amenities and a friendly staff tuned to the needs of local golfers and visitors alike. While the driving range occasionally experiences maintenance downtime, the course itself remains consistently well-kept.

Walkers will find the terrain easy on the legs, though the soft ground near the riverbanks recommends footwear with some grip. For those planning a visit, mid-morning tee times offer an ideal combination of light winds and moderate pace of play. Rocky Point’s blend of classic layout, manageable length, and waterfront ambiance makes it a practical choice for anyone seeking a coastal Maryland golf experience without the usual premium fee.

Course Highlights

Rocky Point’s open, flat seaside layout features large, undulating greens guarded by strategically placed bunkers. The course’s location along the Back River provides variable wind conditions that influence shot making, especially on the longer par 4s and par 5s. The presence of local wildlife adds a unique dimension to the round, offering serene views alongside the tactical challenge.

This was a beautiful course! My group played in the rain and the views made it still enjoyable. The par 4s and 5s added a nice challenge and kept it interesting! With the course's location and nice grounds, the price is amazing. I highly recommend playing this course if you get the chance!

Drove 20 minutes to practice & they were doing “maintenance” to the range. Mind you, They have turf mats, what are they maintaining exactly? (Nothing was being worked on & the range was covered in range balls) Are they painting the yardage signs? I’ll be sure to call the clubhouse to check on the range from now on at this joke of a course, Maybe focus on doing maintenance on the course you charge $60 a head for, y’know the one crators on every green & lop sided tee boxes?

This course is just fun to play, even after getting all that rain last night… still in great shape.

Beautiful golf course right on the water near Essex. Classic old course. Long with large greens. Course in great shape, but greens were very slow. Pace of play somewhat slow, but it is a public course in the afternoon. But, saw eagles, herons and ospreys while waiting, so time went by well. Overall, excellent experience.
