Boone's Trace National Golf Club

Richmond, Kentucky, USACentral Kentucky

Boone's Trace National Golf Club offers a parkland-style 18-hole challenge with rolling elevation and natural features that reward thoughtful play. Its well-kept fairways, quick greens, and modern amenities create an experience suited for a broad range of golfers seeking quality public golf in Central Kentucky.

Course Overview

Boone's Trace National Golf Club in Richmond, Kentucky, offers an 18-hole public course that balances scenic elevation changes with inviting playability. Designed with the rolling hills and natural contours of the surrounding landscape, the course presents a parkland-style layout that strategically incorporates native grasses, bunkers, and water hazards. The elevation shifts add depth to each round, requiring thoughtful club selection and precision, especially as you navigate the well-maintained fairways and undulating greens.

The front nine eases players into their round with a layout that rewards accurate tee shots and thoughtful approaches. As the round progresses, the back nine introduces more challenging slope variations and a few well-protected greens, keeping even seasoned players engaged. While the fairways tend to be generous, the rough is persistent, making errant shots costly and encouraging strategic course management.

Course conditions are consistently praised, with crisp fairways and quick yet manageable greens that test pace and touch. The careful upkeep accommodates players across skill levels, making Boone's Trace approachable for those seeking a solid challenge without intimidation. The integration of native grasses and water hazards enhances the natural setting without overwhelming the layout’s flow.

Beyond the course itself, Boone's Trace National enriches the experience with modern amenities, including updated golf carts equipped with GPS systems that provide real-time yardages and course mapping. The clubhouse offers quality dining options with a welcoming atmosphere, perfect for post-round relaxation or socializing. Staff friendliness stands out, contributing to a warm environment that complements the course’s competitive spirit.

Boone's Trace delivers a well-rounded golf experience where natural topology influences shot-making and decision-making at almost every hole. Whether aiming for a personal best or enjoying a casual day on the links, golfers will find a course that rewards preparation, focus, and adaptability in a captivating Kentucky setting.

To be winter, the course was in great shape, and the people we met were very friendly and helpful. A bit pricey at $47 for the winter. Also, didn't enjoy the advertisements in the cart as we were going from one hole to the next - get enough of that plenty of other places. Very sad to hear that the club is moving towards privatization, thus no longer allowing public play, and becoming just another "look how wealthy we are" club. But, thankfully in this area we have plenty of very nice and public courses that believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the course, and not just those whose wallets or donations matter the most.

Course was in excellent condition, even after days of rain. Elevation changes, native grass areas, bunkers, and water provide a challenge to offset wide fairways and rolling greens. Proshop was being renovated, but I'm looking forward to playing here again.

The Boone's Trace staff might just be the friendliest folk in any golf club I've visited in Kentucky. I find a warm welcome in the pro shop jumpstarts my round before I've started onto the tee box. The new layout of the course on the front nine works well and eases players into the round, leaving those treacherous sloped fairways until later on the front. Greens are quick yet manageable. Fairways are neat and crisp, though the onslaught of the sprinkler washed out the most prized area on 14 at around 5 o' clock, making a clean approach more difficult. The rough is worth staying out of. You'll be rewarded for greens and fairways perhaps more than other, flatter courses in Kentucky. The club has done a lot to continue to improve the experience playing here, including updating the carts, which now have accurate GPS systems that track all the distances you'll need on your round. Food and bev are tasty and reasonably priced to boot!

Each year this course and its facilities get better and better. This is easily one of the best slope style courses you will find in Kentucky and that combined with it's location along the Kentucky river and an awesome restaurant with TV's almost everywhere are three of the biggest traits that make this course unique.
