Course Overview

Eagle Trace Golf Course in Morehead, Kentucky, offers an 18-hole layout that balances challenge and accessibility in a setting shaped by natural woodland contours. Owned and operated by Morehead State University, this public course serves both university students and the broader community, creating a unique blend of collegiate energy and local charm. The course’s design takes full advantage of gently rolling terrain, with fairways flanked by mature trees and greens guarded by subtle bunkering that demand thoughtful shot placement.

Players will find Eagle Trace approachable for a wide range of skill levels. While some holes include elevation changes and strategic hazards that test shot-making, the course avoids overwhelming complexity, allowing mid-handicappers and novices to enjoy a round without frustration. The pace typically moves swiftly, aided by an efficient routing and mostly walkable terrain, though golfers should be aware that carts become unavailable after 4 p.m. during certain times, encouraging a traditional walking experience.

The maintenance standards reflect a commitment to steady upkeep, though recent reviews point to some areas needing investment, particularly bunker refurbishment and tee box leveling. Grassgrown bunkers create an unusual visual feature, though they soften the penalty of errant shots. Players should plan accordingly with versatile clubs and expect firm turf underfoot.

Eagle Trace’s welcoming staff, often university students gaining experience in golf operations, contribute to a friendly, community-focused atmosphere. The clubhouse, while modest, supports player needs with basic amenities and space for gatherings. Those seeking a competitive outing or casual round alike will find this course rewarding, particularly during the mild Kentucky spring and fall months.

Visitors considering Eagle Trace should prepare for a straightforward, no-frills golfing experience where the land’s natural contours guide play and pace. The course retains a traditional American golf character, emphasizing shot variety and course management over gimmicks. Course was in really nice shape(except there is no sand in any of the bunkers; they are letting grass grow in all). Staff was super friendly and hospitable. Course play really fast. We will be back.

No carts after 4pm. They said. I was a single. I asked what the advantage that the foursome going off 10 had to play at a faster pace than me playing 9. Thos course is turning to trash, no management and it's like a big fraternity party .

This is a nice course and the staff is great. The course is in great need of additional funding. It is estimated that they lose over hundred thousand dollars a year by not selling alcohol, this would help with their buget, allowing them to make additional improvement such as leveling tee boxes.
