Course Overview
Eagle Trace Golf Course, located in Morehead, Kentucky, offers an 18-hole layout that balances challenge with accessibility, making it a favored destination for golfers of varying skill levels. Owned and operated by Morehead State University, this public course weaves through gently rolling terrain, framed by mature trees and open fairways that encourage strategic shot-making without overwhelming the player.
The course’s layout emphasizes a foundational parkland style, where tree-lined corridors meet well-maintained undulating greens. While the bunkers currently feature grass liners rather than traditional sand, the fairway conditions and green surfaces remain in steady shape, reflecting attentive stewardship despite budgetary constraints. Play moves at a brisk pace, a plus for golfers eager to enjoy a full round without long waits.
Eagle Trace’s approachable design invites players to test their skills with a variety of shots, from precise iron approaches to well-placed drives. Moderate elevation changes add subtle complexity, especially as wind can influence ball flight on the more exposed holes. Club professionals and student staff contribute to a welcoming atmosphere, combining youthful energy with practical course management.
While certain enhancements such as tee box leveling and bunker restoration are on the horizon pending funding, the course’s core features maintain an enjoyable playing experience. The absence of cart availability after 4 p.m. encourages walking, which suits the compact yet diverse layout. Walkers should prepare with comfortable footwear, as footing ranges from smooth turf to gently sloped inclines.
The clubhouse serves as a straightforward gathering point, offering respite and camaraderie after the round. Although alcohol sales are currently restricted, plans to broaden amenities could further enrich the visitor experience. For those touring Central Kentucky, Eagle Trace stands as a solid test of golf with an inviting environment that reflects the spirit and hospitality of a university course.

This course is a big improvement over the one when I was at Morehead 1972 to 1976

Course was in really nice shape(except there is no sand in any of the bunkers; they are letting grass grow in all). Staff was super friendly and hospitable. Course play really fast. We will be back.

No carts after 4pm. They said. I was a single. I asked what the advantage that the foursome going off 10 had to play at a faster pace than me playing 9. Thos course is turning to trash, no management and it's like a big fraternity party .

This is a nice course and the staff is great. The course is in great need of additional funding. It is estimated that they lose over hundred thousand dollars a year by not selling alcohol, this would help with their buget, allowing them to make additional improvement such as leveling tee boxes.
