Course Overview

Shady Hollow Golf Course in Cub Run, Kentucky offers an 18-hole public layout that appeals to golfers seeking a blend of challenge and natural beauty. This course stands out not for sand traps but for its strategic use of water hazards and undulating terrain that tests precision and club selection from tee to green. Each hole demands thoughtful play, with rolling fairways and tricky elevation changes that affect shot shape and distance control. The absence of bunkers shifts focus to managing the course’s flowing contours and variable wind, which often plays a crucial role in club choice and strategy.

Set against a backdrop of tranquil Kentucky woodland and gentle ravines, Shady Hollow rewards players who approach it with patience and adaptability. The par-3 holes display special character, particularly the 6th hole that crosses over a ravine and the 18th, an island green that can both entice and intimidate in equal measure. These finishing challenges ensure a memorable round, emphasizing accuracy over power.

Golfers describe the course as tough yet fair, with greens that respond well and add definition to each hole’s challenge. While the course demands respect, it does not punish unduly, making it a strong choice for golfers who want to test their skills without frustration. The groundskeepers’ diligent care results in well-maintained fairways and receptive putting surfaces, elevating the overall experience.

Shady Hollow has also earned recognition for its friendly atmosphere, with a welcoming clubhouse and staff eager to support players through their rounds. The course’s hidden location away from main thoroughfares creates a peaceful retreat where focus on the game comes naturally.

For those planning a visit, the terrain and length call for comfortable walking shoes, and careful consideration of weather conditions is advised, especially during windier days that can shift shot difficulty dramatically. This course invites multiple rounds to truly understand its nuances, with each outing offering a new puzzle to solve amid its unique landscape. Shady Hollow is a fitting destination for players valuing challenge combined with the reward of striking scenery and quality course management.

Really enjoyed this course. It was definitely tough. Although no sand in site, plenty of water though, particularly on the front nine. We lost the battery in our range finder, so our distance control was bit off, and the 10-20+ wind made almost every shot a challenge. The par three we're exceptional, especially 6 and 18, over a ravine and and island green, respectively.

What a neat course . The groundskeepers are doing a tremendous job. And the layout is one of the most unique I’ve ever seen . You have to carefully select each club as yardages and undulations even in the fairway requires careful decision making . What a challenge and what an incredible place to play . never seen anything like it . Enjoyed every minute of it .

Nice public course. Very challenging and one of the more difficult courses I’ve played. Spectacular holes with great views. Good value as well. The day we played the pins were in some rough spots. Several holes were so hard that if you were above the hole you most certainly would roll off the green if you missed the cup. I’d like to play this during peak season to see how much different it would play.

Hidden gem off the beaten path! A challenging layout that'll cost a couple strokes until you have a couple rounds in the bag, but not punishing by any means. Greens are receptive and have character. Beautiful surroundings, picturesque views. 18 is a great closing hole! Friendly folks in the clubhouse.

This is a very tricky and strategic course. There are ponds, dog wrecks, etc., so it is necessary to make sure that each count does its job properly. This is the perfect course to test your skills.
