Shady Hollow Golf Course

Cub Run, Kentucky, USACentral Kentucky

Shady Hollow Golf Course delivers a unique 18-hole challenge in central Kentucky, defined by water hazards, elevation shifts, and distinctive par-threes. Offering a mix of strategic complexity and scenic rolling hills, this public course invites golfers of varied skill levels to experience thoughtful, engaging play.

Course Overview

Shady Hollow Golf Course, located in Cub Run, Kentucky, offers an 18-hole public layout that stands out for its distinctive terrain and challenging play. This course departs from traditional designs by embracing the natural undulations and water features that both test and reward strategic decision-making. Without a single bunker in sight, the course instead relies on water hazards and elevation changes to create a compelling challenge that commands respect from every level of golfer.

From the first tee, players will notice the careful thought required for club selection, as subtle yardage differences and uneven fairways influence shot execution. The front nine, in particular, introduces a variety of water features that come into play, forcing precision and mental focus. The par-three holes are especially notable, with the sixth hole playing over a deep ravine—demanding both confidence and accuracy—and the 18th closing out the round with an island green that leaves a lasting impression.

Though the course pushes players to engage every aspect of their game, it remains accessible enough to welcome intermediate players seeking growth alongside seasoned golfers drawn by the test it provides. The greens exhibit a unique character: receptive, yet undulating enough to keep putting skills sharp. Wind is often a factor here, especially across the more exposed stretches, introducing an element of unpredictability that encourages players to adapt.

Set among open, rolling hills, Shady Hollow offers scenic views that complement its playing conditions rather than distract. This is a golf experience where the environment silently demands respect, influencing every shot and inviting golfers to embrace thoughtful play.

Beyond the course itself, the clubhouse staff is known for friendly service, creating a welcoming atmosphere for first-time visitors and returning guests alike. For those planning a trip, the best times to play are during late spring through early fall, when course conditions tend to be at their peak.

Shady Hollow balances challenge and accessibility without relying on conventional hazards, making it an engaging destination for those looking to test their strategic and shot-making abilities in central Kentucky.

Course Highlights

Shady Hollow is distinctive for its lack of sand traps, relying instead on water hazards and terrain undulations to shape its challenge. Signature holes include the par-three sixth, which plays over a ravine, and the closing 18th with an island green. The course’s layout demands accurate club selection throughout and adapts well to varying wind conditions that test shot control. Rolling hills frame the course with open vistas, while greens show expressive contours that reward precise putting.

What a neat course . The groundskeepers are doing a tremendous job. And the layout is one of the most unique I’ve ever seen . You have to carefully select each club as yardages and undulations even in the fairway requires careful decision making . What a challenge and what an incredible place to play . never seen anything like it . Enjoyed every minute of it .

This is a very tricky and strategic course. There are ponds, dog wrecks, etc., so it is necessary to make sure that each count does its job properly. This is the perfect course to test your skills.

Hidden gem off the beaten path! A challenging layout that'll cost a couple strokes until you have a couple rounds in the bag, but not punishing by any means. Greens are receptive and have character. Beautiful surroundings, picturesque views. 18 is a great closing hole! Friendly folks in the clubhouse.

Nice public course. Very challenging and one of the more difficult courses I’ve played. Spectacular holes with great views. Good value as well. The day we played the pins were in some rough spots. Several holes were so hard that if you were above the hole you most certainly would roll off the green if you missed the cup. I’d like to play this during peak season to see how much different it would play.

Really enjoyed this course. It was definitely tough. Although no sand in site, plenty of water though, particularly on the front nine. We lost the battery in our range finder, so our distance control was bit off, and the 10-20+ wind made almost every shot a challenge. The par three we're exceptional, especially 6 and 18, over a ravine and and island green, respectively.
