Finkbine Golf Course
Finkbine Golf Course offers a versatile 18-hole public layout just west of Iowa City, blending approachable fairways with challenging greens. Known for its well-maintained turf and top-tier driving range, it is a favored spot for golfers of all abilities seeking quality play near the University of Iowa.
Course Overview
Located just west of Iowa City’s bustling center, Finkbine Golf Course stands as a refined and thoughtfully designed 18-hole layout that serves both the University of Iowa community and local golf enthusiasts. This public course offers a balanced blend of challenge and approachability, making it an attractive destination for players of all experience levels. Soft, receptive fairways create an inviting canvas for strategic shot-making, while the well-maintained greens provide subtle breaks and elevation changes that keep golfers mentally engaged throughout the round.
The course’s setting along Melrose Avenue unfolds over gently rolling terrain, punctuated by mature trees that frame many holes without obstructing sightlines or playability. The absence of dense forest also means that sunlight filters generously across the fairways, though players should prepare for limited shade during sunnier days. Elevation shifts and modest bunkering demand precision, rewarding thoughtful course management rather than brute force.
Finkbine’s recent clubhouse enhancements bring a modern touch to the golfing experience, complementing the course’s long-standing reputation as a staple of Iowa City’s golf scene. Golf carts are equipped with GPS technology, aiding players in course navigation and yardage estimation. Walking the course is feasible, particularly on cooler days when footing on softer turf is easier, but golfers should note that the layout may be more comfortable with a cart given occasional soggy conditions after rain.
The course maintains a lively yet welcoming atmosphere reflective of its university affiliation. Regulars appreciate the consistency of the greens, which have fast speeds paired with thoughtful pin placements that test putting touch without overwhelming less experienced players. The driving range, frequently cited as the best in town, offers ample space to warm up or refine techniques before heading out.
Finkbine’s design is straightforward but not simplistic, ideal for golfers seeking a course that challenges without intimidating. Whether one is looking for a reliable place to play casual golf, sharpen skills, or enjoy a college-town atmosphere, Finkbine Golf Course remains a worthy stop within Iowa City’s active golfing community.

Good course and interesting layout! We played about 2 weeks ago and the only complaint my group had was that the beverage cart girls would automatically tip themselves 20% on the iPad tip screen before flipping it back to us, which is not right. We watched her do this both times we ordered from the bev cart. It should be the customer that selects the tip amount, not staff. I hope this can be corrected with your staff.

Only been to this course once, but fairways are soft and receptive. The greens were challenging with pin placement and elevation changes. I would highly recommend this course. Great carts with GPS as well.

A first rate university course on a beautiful tract of land a couple of miles west of Kinnick Stadium. A new clubhouse enhances the ambiance. Highly recommended.

Best driving range in town. The course is fun and challenging and the greens are well maintained. Pretty soggy after a rain and not much shade on the course but a very interesting layout that can be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels.
