Elkhorn Golf Club offers an 18-hole mountain course experience in Sun Valley, Idaho, combining scenic views of the Sawtooth Mountains with a layout that balances playability and challenge. Players can expect smooth greens, strategic bunkers, and a setting that invites both reflection and competition.

Course Overview

Elkhorn Golf Club in Sun Valley, Idaho, offers an 18-hole challenge set against the striking backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains. This public course stretches over 6,700 yards from the back tees, presenting a layout that blends mountain golf with wide-open fairways and strategically placed hazards. The terrain varies between gentle slopes and subtle undulations, providing a textured test that players of various skill levels can appreciate.

While the layout demands thoughtful shot placement, it remains approachable for mid-handicappers and casual players alike. The course balances playability with moments of strategic depth, where bunkers and water hazards subtly influence club selection and course management. Greens are known for their smooth surfaces, though they require precise approach shots to avoid challenging pin positions.

Scenery is integral to the Elkhorn experience. Mature pines frame several holes, and sweeping views reveal the rugged contours of the surrounding mountains. The open fairways allow prevailing winds to factor into play, testing rhythm and distance control without overpowering the golfer. This natural setting enhances the pace of play while inviting moments of quiet reflection amid the outdoors.

Despite some operational quirks noted by visitors, such as limited signage and no beverage carts, the course maintains well-kept fairways and greens, particularly during peak season. Amenities include a clubhouse with dining options praised for quality food, where players can unwind after rounds with views that complement the mountain air.

Visitors planning a game should be prepared for walking, as the course encourages pedestrian play to fully engage with its varied contours and vistas. Good shoes are recommended, especially given mild elevation changes and occasional uneven terrain.

Elkhorn Golf Club stands as a solid option for golfers seeking a mountain course experience paired with accessible design. Its blend of natural beauty and varied challenges invites both locals and visitors to test their skills while connecting with one of Idaho’s distinctive golf venues.

Course Highlights

I was in the golf business for 6 years. This is the worst run golf course I’ve ever encountered. The pro was rude. No beverage cart. No water jugs on the course. The pins had not been changed in several days. I would not play this course again for free. $215 for a terrible afternoon. If it weren’t for the beautiful views, this would be a below average muni. I would give them 0 stars if I could. Stay away!

Played here last week and had a great time on the golf course. Jon one of the guys working the day I was there was a great help and accommodating. Would play here every week if I could.

We enjoyed our golf experience. There are some things that need to be changed or dealt with...like signs to a couple holes and their hours. Good closes at 4 or 5 and the clubhouse closes at 5. So weird for a golf course. Our food was amazing though! The burger was juicy and that pasta salad was delish!

We went to the all you can eat Friday fish and chips at a great price. The fish was outstanding, made with cod filets, not pressed cod meat. The fries were waffle fries piping hot. The atmosphere was special along with the views. Service couldn't have been better. We are locals and this restaurant will be one of only few that we will patronize frequently.

A very nice golf course. We played on 5/21/22 with 8 people on a work trip. 6 of our group are below average golfers so we played as a scramble for them. The course was open enough that it was playable for the majority of our group, but also highly recommended by the two of us that are mid to low handicappers. There were some small brown spots in the rough and around tee boxes, but the fairways and greens were in perfect condition (2 weeks before peak season). More signs are needed by the clubhouse to direct players to the driving range and 1st tees, as well as to hole #12. You have to cross the street (no signs to direct you), otherwise you end up at #18. The pro shop was only open from 9am-4pm, and there are no drink carts on the course, or any "to-go" food or snacks at the pro shop or restaurant. It looks like there is a walk up window downstairs but it inside was completely empty so it may only be open during the peak season. I will definitely come and play again and have no reservations recommending the golf course.

Three years later, what a difference. 180 bucks a round, sloppy rude service from the pro shop to the cart barn, no beverage cart, no starter, they haven't had service at the turn for I don't know long now, the kitchen closes at 4..... what happened here folks, everyone I spoke with said that the management is the worst, and I certainly don't doubt it, based on what I experienced. Sun Valley should really be ashamed of how the Elkhorn course and experience have let every local and guest down. Please don't blame supply chain, staffing shortages, or covid... we are all over those excuses. This is just plain poor training, staff and management. You are setting an example of how it should not be done. So sad....
