Bigwood Golf Course: Ketchum’s Rugged Gem
Bigwood Golf in Ketchum offers an approachable 18-hole public course set against the Sawtooth Mountains. Known for wide fairways and a natural, rugged character, it blends relaxed playability with scenic mountain views and a friendly local vibe.
Course Overview
Bigwood Golf in Ketchum, Idaho, presents a distinctive golfing experience that contrasts sharply with the polished resorts nearby. This 18-hole public course welcomes players seeking a laid-back, approachable round amid expansive mountain views and wide-open fairways. The layout unfolds across gently rolling terrain, reflecting a blend of parkland and rustic natural elements that maintain a genuine, unrefined character rather than manicured perfection.
Set against the backdrop of the Sawtooth Mountains, the course’s generous fairways invite a strategic approach without overwhelming beginners. Players often appreciate the clear sightlines from tee to green, though the condition of the turf and especially the greens varies throughout the season. Those visiting should temper expectations about smooth putting surfaces but be rewarded with a course that challenges tactful shot-making over raw power. The occasional wind stirring through the natural hollows can test both tempo and club choice, adding a subtle layer of complexity.
Bigwood Golf embraces a recreational spirit rather than tournament-grade conditioning. Its charm lies in the informal welcoming atmosphere, where local golfers and visitors alike find camaraderie unlikely at a more exclusive venue. The staff contribute to this experience, with reports singling out the friendly cart attendants enhancing the day’s flow. Food options near the clubhouse include simple but satisfying offerings, perfect for refueling between holes or after a round.
For those planning a visit, comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to some uneven areas and natural course contours. Golf carts are available though many prefer to walk to soak in the surrounding mountain air and sunshine. The course’s setting just a few minutes from downtown Ketchum makes it accessible for players eager to combine golf with Idaho’s broader outdoor attractions.
Bigwood Golf invites golfers ready to experience a raw, character-filled round where nature holds sway more than manicured condition. Its distinctive identity and scenic openness offer a refreshing alternative to the polished courses of the region, rewarding players who value atmosphere and challenge over pristine greens.

Big Wood is the red headed step child of Sun Valley golf. It’s beat up, has some scars and the greens suck. That being said - golfers/staff here are non pretentious and welcoming. The course is overpriced no doubt but it’s challenging and has character. The cart guy “Carl” is fantastic and really made our day.

Excellent sandwiches and breakfast burritos, beautiful wide open and blue and white skies! Beautiful expanses of fresh green! I grandfather-in my appreciation to this course. I must thank my coach and friend Blake (seen here), for helping me go: from a complete novice... (Someone who thought occulus practice could somehow translate to the green! He teases me all the time deservedly so.) ...to: after only 5 games, being able to complete a round close to par. Bigwood Golf Club has my heart and fondness for life.

Course was fun. Other reviews are correct that it’s over priced and some areas of the course were not in good condition. But fun play good scenery. More of a recreational golf course

Super fun course in a most beautiful setting but struggling with the grass

It’s crazy that this place has 4 stars. The greens were terrible and unkept. They turned on the sprinklers right in the middle of us playing our hole. Would not recommend.

Until this property is sold or refinanced, don’t bother. Have been coming here for 20 years and have NEVER seen it in such poor condition. Greens are horrible. No range or putting green. Not recommended.
