Hunter Ranch Golf Course and Restaurant

Paso Robles, California, USACentral California

Hunter Ranch Golf Course and Restaurant in Paso Robles offers an engaging 18-hole public layout defined by rolling hills, firm greens, and strategic blind shots. Its balance of challenge and accessibility makes it a rewarding destination amid California’s wine country.

Course Overview

Set against the rolling hills and expansive vineyards of Paso Robles, Hunter Ranch Golf Course and Restaurant offers an engaging 18-hole challenge that will appeal to golfers seeking variety and thoughtful design. This public layout weaves through a landscape that shifts from open fairways to strategically contoured holes lined with well-placed bunkers. The course's backbone is its ever-changing topography, where blind shots and doglegs demand both precision and shot planning, especially on the back nine. Here, the fairways often fade out into hillsides, requiring careful navigation and attention to GPS yardage markers that aid in plotting each tee shot’s trajectory.

Hunter Ranch strikes a balance between rewarding solid ball-striking and punishing errant shots. Greens are consistently firm and fast, offering a true test of speed control and putting stroke. While the course can challenge low handicaps with its undulating surfaces and forced carries, it remains accessible enough for most players to enjoy without intimidation. The fairways are lush and maintained, providing a quality playing surface despite occasional uneven tee boxes reported in some visits.

The experience extends beyond the course with a friendly pro shop and a restaurant praised for its inviting atmosphere and satisfying fare, where players can refuel after 18 holes. The combination of thoughtful architecture, natural hillside features, and vineyards in view creates an environment that rewards focus while allowing golfers to appreciate the distinct character of the Central California wine country.

For players planning a visit, walking is recommended to fully absorb the subtle elevation shifts and nuances of each hole, though carts are available. It’s wise to bring firm-soled shoes for footing on sloping terrain and keep an eye on course conditions, which typically remain in good shape through the warmer months. In all, Hunter Ranch delivers a compelling round that tests strategy and skill without sacrificing enjoyment for golfers of varied experience.

This place is awesome. Was a bit skeptical of the green fees but quickly realized they’re worth it as the greens are running PURE, bunkering is well maintained, and fairways are lush. Add in the thoughtful course design by a fairly renowned architect and you have a beautiful golf course.

Nice staff. Cool club house and nice practice facilities. Greens are very good! Only reason for the 4 stars is the back nine. It’s just tricked up and you feel like they tried to fit holes in to finish the course.

Surrounded by vineyards, this is a nicely designed challenging course, especially the back 9 holes where there are quite a few force carries and dog legged challenges. Condition was reasonably good in most holes. The restaurant also made a really delicious club sandwich!

Started going to hunter ranch again and it’s gone way downhill. Tee boxes are always trashed and uneven, the greens are always full of ball marks fairways are about the only good part. And all the times I’ve went the staff has been rude and or not very pleasant. And they complain about me RENTING a kart and always tell me they can’t keep doing that blah blah blah at a golf course for an hour to go hit some balls to go down to the driving range. So I’m glad I didn’t become a member. Have the day you deserve.

First time playing Hunter Ranch and the course is challenging. The back nine is a little quirky with blind shots and fairways that run out. Definitely pay attention to the GPS on the tiny screen to figure out your line. Pro shop and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful for this first timer. Greens are firm and fast.
