Course Overview
Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, California, offers an extraordinary journey through one of the most esteemed examples of classic golf architecture in the United States. This 18-hole, par-72 layout epitomizes the traditional parkland style with undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and greens that command thorough study and deft touch. Designed by the legendary Alister MacKenzie, Pasatiempo was crafted as a nuanced, thought-provoking challenge that never sacrifices playability. Players of varying levels will find the course approachable during early holes, but the terrain steadily asserts pressure through complex green shapes and well-guarded pin positions.
The terrain around Pasatiempo reflects the rolling foothills of Santa Cruz, showcasing gentle elevation changes and mature tree lines that define many of the strategic decisions each round demands. The layout's distinctive feature lies in its green complexes, which are both expansive and contoured, testing putting strokes with subtle breaks and careful reading. Bunkers are sculpted with intention and flair, framing the greens and fairways as both hazards and visual highlights. The coastal influence brings a fresh breeze that subtly impacts play, inviting golfers to adjust their shotmaking throughout the round.
Visitors to Pasatiempo can expect a private club environment focused on tradition and preserving the architectural integrity of the course. The clubhouse provides refined amenities that complement the on-course experience, offering a welcoming atmosphere after an engaging day of golf. While the course caters primarily to more experienced golfers seeking a classic test, the variety of tee boxes ensures that less seasoned players can navigate the course without feeling overwhelmed.
Walking Pasatiempo rewards golfers with intimate views of the landscape’s contours, encouraging a paced rhythm that suits thoughtful play. The course demands respect but not reverence, inviting thoughtful strategy over brute force. Whether seeking to deepen one’s appreciation for MacKenzie’s design genius or simply looking for a memorable round on a historic course, Pasatiempo delivers an experience rich in character and challenge.

There’s something very nostalgic about this golf course and I love it. It’s easy to get excited about playing a MacKenzie course but once you get there you get a greater appreciation for how this course was built and the inspiration that went into Augusta. He uses the land amazingly and doesn't try and make it terribly difficult for newer golfers, but the greens and bunker positions are what can kill you on this course. But have fun because this is the only golf course that almost makes you feel like you’re in a different time.

Any serious golfer would rank this in their top 5 in the world. The creativity and design is unmatched. You could play it 100 times and never have the same putt. The green complexes are extraordinary.

It is a beautiful and challenging course. The front 9 probably to warm you up but the back 9 definitely a challenge for every single hole. Tricky and character, you have to plan tour hot before teeing off as you will get into the trap and sand bunker easily. Putting still manageable except on hole 18 par 3, you better put close to the pin as it will easily roll out of green! It was a fun but tired after 18 holes !

Unbelievable afternoon at Pasa. Was fortunate to play Pebble a couple weeks ago and thought it’d never be topped, but then I played here. Great test and my first Mackenzie. Best course I’ve played so far - can’t wait to go back.
