Course Overview

Santa Barbara Golf Club offers a refreshing challenge for players seeking an 18-hole public course just minutes from the Pacific coastline. Located at 3500 McCaw Avenue, this municipal gem provides an accessible yet thoughtfully designed layout that caters to golfers of varied skill levels, blending enjoyable playability with natural foothill terrain. The course is characterized by gently rolling hills and strategic bunkering that require precision off the tee and thoughtful approach shots. The greens offer moderate speed and subtle breaks, providing an engaging putting surface without overwhelming less experienced players.

The setting combines open fairways with pockets of native grasses and oak clusters, creating a landscape that feels both inviting and unpretentious. Although not situated directly on the beach, the proximity to Santa Barbara’s iconic coastline lends an airy, coastal spirit to the surroundings. Players can expect occasional winds that subtly test judgment and shot shaping, especially in afternoon rounds.

Facilities include a small but well-maintained practice range where visitors can fine-tune their swing before heading out. The clubhouse features a café with quality food that rivals many private establishments, making post-round meals a highlight after navigating the course’s gentle elevations. Rental equipment is available on site, notably a selection of new TaylorMade clubs and a Scotty Cameron putter, which adds convenience for travelers or casual players.

Santa Barbara Golf Club handles a steady stream of visitors, especially during peak vacation seasons, so those who prefer a quicker pace should consider early morning tee times. Walking the course provides an immersive experience with its hilly stretches, though players should be prepared for moderate fitness demands and appropriate footwear.

The course's approachable design, combined with well-kept conditions and a friendly staff, makes it a worthy visit for locals and visitors alike. It represents one of the finest public golfing opportunities in Santa Barbara for those looking to enjoy competitive play close to a renowned coastal city without compromising value or quality.

Great for a muni course and easy to get to about 8-10 minutes from the beach in town. Loved the layout. Greens were on the slower side. Small practice range on site. Super friendly staff. I saw another guy grab rental clubs that were brand new Taylormade with a Scotty Cameron putter - if you don’t bring your own you won’t get stuck. The clubhouse and cafe was great - country club quality food. I played a late afternoon round at 5:15pm (last group - early august) - play was painfully slow. We didn’t even get 9 holes in before sundown at 8:15. We walked to be able to play a little longer ( it’s hilly) a cart wouldn’t have helped go faster. Remember, it’s the closest public course to a vacation destination, so we were not disappointed and expected slow play and enjoyed the environment. I would give it 4.3 stars if that was an option. Morning round might be quicker.

Except for the overturned tanker truck on the 101, we had a Great time playing this course, again. For us it was worth the drive up from Orange County. The staff is Great, thanks for the enjoyable day.
