Monterey Pines Golf Club

Monterey, California, USACentral California Coast

Monterey Pines Golf Club presents an 18-hole lakeside parkland course offering an inviting mix of pine-lined fairways and strategic challenges. With accessible design and well-maintained conditions, it caters to all skill levels while delivering coastal breezes and scenic California views.

Course Overview

Monterey Pines Golf Club offers an engaging 18-hole layout that blends coastal California charm with approachable yet thoughtful course design. Located just off Garden Road in Monterey, California, this public course operates within a military setting but welcomes golfers across all experience levels. Its parkland style features pine-lined fairways that create distinct corridors for tee shots while providing a gentle challenge without overwhelming hazards. The course length plays modestly, making it suitable for casual rounds or practice sessions yet still testing precision through tight landing areas and smaller, well-manicured greens.

Players encounter a course where natural elements are part of the story. The coastal breeze is a subtle player, affecting club selection and requiring a measured tempo on longer holes. Scattered bunkers guard select greens and fairways, prompting strategic thinking and shot shaping. Though the rough is generally forgiving, occasional pockets invite recovery skills, rewarding patience and shot planning. Some holes funnel through mature pine clusters, creating a unique rhythm as golfers transition from open stretches to tighter corridors.

Facilities at Monterey Pines enhance the experience without distracting from the game. The clubhouse serves as a welcoming hub, offering pro shop services and equipment rentals to accommodate visitors and locals alike. Cart rentals are available but the course layout supports walking, with well-maintained paths and gentle terrain. This makes it an inviting option for those who enjoy a traditional stroll and desire to experience the course at a walking pace.

Play here is defined by a relaxed atmosphere paired with solid conditioning. Fairways and greens regularly receive positive remarks for their upkeep, providing consistent surfaces for putting and approaches. While the course length is on the shorter side, a handful of drivable par 4s and three par 5s introduce enough variety to keep strategy fresh. Water features on select holes add visual interest and a touch of risk-reward.

Monterey Pines is a practical choice for golfers looking to enjoy well-kept grounds, light coastal winds, and a welcoming environment just minutes from Monterey’s central attractions. It delivers an experience that balances challenge and accessibility, making it an appealing stop on any California coastal golf itinerary.

Course Highlights

The course is distinguished by its integration of mature pine stands that guide play along its parkland fairways, a handful of drivable par 4s that reward precision and courage, and smaller greens that demand accurate iron play. Water hazards and strategically placed bunkers punctuate the design, setting up risk-reward decisions without penalizing less experienced players. Though located adjacent to a small airport, the occasional low-flying aircraft adds an unexpected layer to the playing atmosphere. This blend of military grounds and public access makes Monterey Pines a unique spot along the Central California coast.

Great little track. Not super long, but kept up well. Extremely long round of golf, ad they really pack in the tee times. Had fun and the rentals were decently priced. They accommodated squeezing two of us in the day before we made our reservation which I appreciated.

Monterey Pines Golf Resort is a hidden gem! The course is in great shape, with well-maintained fairways and greens that roll true. It's the perfect blend of challenge and fun, whether you're a casual golfer or more experienced. The layout is beautiful, with scenic views and that fresh coastal air that just makes the whole experience better. Staff were welcoming and professional from the moment I checked in. Pace of play was smooth, and it never felt rushed or crowded. Great value for the quality of the course, especially considering the location. Whether you're local or just visiting the area, Monterey Pines is absolutely worth a round. Can’t wait to come back!

Drove up from San Diego for a last-minute birthday trip for my guy, we're so glad that we chose to play at this course. Every part of this golf course was very well maintained. The tee boxes, even the forward tees, were flat and perfectly manicured, providing a perfect teeing ground. The fairways were in great shape and not too narrow. The rough was manageable but challenging in some spots. The greens were on the smaller size, a bit of a challenge for some of us less skilled golfers. I can't think of a single one that was not in fantastic shape. The course is located next to a small airport, so if small planes occasionally flying over your head freaks you out, then maybe this one is not for you. This course is a military course but open to the public. It is a fantastic value, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the area

Loved this little golf course. Built right around the airport, lots of fun with some very nice holes. Reasonable prices with military discounts. Ask about the passes. Definitely recommend

This was a pleasant first experience starting when I arrived at the clubhouse. The pro shop informed me that my reservation was for the next day, as I had made a mistake when I booked it. They were very understanding and kind enough to get me out on the course about the same time I had booked anyway. I rented a cart and we started play around 1:30. It was so pleasant that I never had to wait on any hole. Great pace of play to enjoy a really nice day on the course. The fairways and the greens were in fantastic condition. Everything was lush and green and well maintained. I wish courses would get back to having ball washers on the tee boxes but this is yet another course that has done away with them. That was my only complaint though. The paths were great all over the course and the signage was also clear and easy to follow around the course. We played our round in less that 3 1/2 hours and we were a foursome, so pace was really a pleasant factor for our round. The course is a bit short which was fun as there were a couple of drivable par 4's but still had 3 par 5's to challenge your fairway woods. The par 3's were challenging with water on a couple of holes as well to make things interesting. Overall I really liked this course and I will look forward to returning to play it again.

A shot and sweet course, which they blend in the pine trees adequately into the design, all the conditions are good, enjoy my game here a lot. Not many hazards, just some bunkers, but did like some of the holes have trees in the middle of fairway. Meanwhile, it's a nice and easy environment to spend your weekend at.
