Del Monte Golf Course

Monterey, California, USACentral California Coast

Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California, is a public 18-hole parkland layout offering a friendly yet precise golf experience. Its fast, sloped greens and coastal mountain views create a distinctive challenge accessible to all skill levels.

Course Overview

Del Monte Golf Course offers an 18-hole layout that balances accessibility with subtle challenges, creating a playing experience well suited to a broad spectrum of golfers. Located just off the rugged Monterey coastline in California, this course is a public facility that presents a refreshing alternative to the more renowned and demanding courses in the area. Its parkland style stretches across gently undulating terrain, framed by mature trees and occasional glimpses of coastal mountain vistas that lend a quiet natural charm without overwhelming the game.

Fairways at Del Monte run generous and forgiving, inviting players to take aggressive lines without acute penalty. However, the course shifts character noticeably once attention turns to the greens. Known for their speed and pronounced slopes, these greens demand precision in both approach shots and putting strokes. Reading breaks accurately and controlling speed here become crucial tasks, rewarding concentration and patience with scoring opportunities.

The routing avoids extreme elevation changes, making the course walkable yet engaging, with a layout that flows steadily from hole to hole. Seasonal coastal winds can influence club selection and shot shaping, adding a variable that tests playability without frustrating casual rounds. The course’s overall length is moderate, making it inclusive for players from beginners to mid and low handicaps seeking a pleasant yet thoughtful challenge.

While Del Monte does not boast the grandeur or signature dramatics of nearby courses, it compensates with a well-maintained playing surface and a welcoming atmosphere. A roaming food cart adds convenience during play, although planning refreshment needs in advance is advisable. Rental clubs and a pro shop round out the core amenities, ensuring that visitors have the essentials covered.

Those looking to experience Monterey’s golf offerings without the premium price tag will find Del Monte a practical destination. The course allows an authentic embrace of the region’s mild climate and scenic surroundings, encouraging players to focus on shot execution over intimidation. Whether arriving for a twilight round or a full day of golf, Del Monte provides an approachable yet rewarding venue framed by California’s distinctive coastal landscape.

Course Highlights

Del Monte is characterized by its fast, contoured greens that reward careful pace control, and fairways that provide room for creative shotmaking. Easy on fairways but tough on greens, is what I will summarize my playing at Del Monte. It's really a nice course, the fairways and greens are all well maintained, one thing is that their greens are all slopes, so you either putt incline or decline, need to be very accurate on the speed, otherwise you will easily get 3 putts.

It’s much cheaper than the main pebble beach course but of-course much more straightforward and easier. It was damp and the ball didn’t roll so wasn’t able to get good distance. We rented clubs from them. Overall very scenic Mountain Views. Staff are very friendly especially Donn who took care of us. It was approx 100 per head for twilight hour starting at 3.30pm that included green fees, cart and rental clubs. Balls you have to buy from the shop. The great thing about this course is its history.

Nice and old golf course. Very narrow fairway and small green but well maintained and fast green. I hope they can put golf GPS on golf cart.

Coming from the Central Valley, it was a great experience playing on the coast. The fairways were lush and the greens were challenging. The design of this course doesn’t bring you back to the clubhouse after 9 holes like most courses. They have a cart roaming around with food onboard, but if you want something she doesn’t have, the order must go through her (that’s what I was told) so just plan for that.

Played here Sunday, May 18th…. First the positive… greens are great. Now, no GPS on golf carts is an absolute insult even though I use a rangefinder it would be nice to be able to see how some of the holes flow, also a lot of the holes seem exactly the same. They need to move the 17th green it’s literally 5 yards away from patio of Hyatt Regency. Would not play here again.

Perfect condition, stay out of the rough and play darts with your short game on the small greens

I played this course back in the 80’s and had good memories of my time so long ago and retuning all these years later it was nice to see my memories of this course were still true. It’s a well maintained and beautiful course in the heart of Monterey. The course is moderately challenging with really speedy greens, as many reviews have mentioned. The staff was friendly and efficient and the pace of play was great for us with a 2:00 tee time on a Tuesday. I look forward to returning again and I won’t wait so long this time…
