RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill

Prattville, Alabama, USACentral Alabama

RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill offers three distinct 18-hole courses ranging from links-style to parkland layouts, delivering diverse challenges suited to both mid and low handicap players. Well-maintained conditions and extensive practice facilities provide a rewarding golf experience in the heart of Central Alabama’s woodlands.

Course Overview

RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill in Prattville, Alabama offers a trio of distinct 18-hole courses that cater to a wide range of golfers seeking varied challenges within a southern landscape steeped in golf tradition. The Senator course stands out with its classic links-style design, featuring undulating fairways punctuated by deep bunkers that demand both strategic tee shots and precision approach play. This course tests your shot-making, requiring respect for the wind and a steady short game to navigate its extensive network of 140 bunkers. Though firmly demanding, it remains approachable by those who prioritize smart course management.

The Judge course offers a contrasting experience, presenting a parkland layout with rolling terrain and a layout that balances playability with challenge. Its generous fairways are framed by mature trees and strategically placed hazards, inviting golfers to focus on accuracy and shot placement. While not as penal as some championship courses, the Judge still rewards low-handicap players who can take advantage of risk-reward opportunities.

The third course, the Legislator, is well regarded for its run of challenging greens and subtle elevation changes that add a dynamic element to each hole. Each course at Capitol Hill benefits from careful upkeep, with well-maintained tee boxes, fairways, and greens that reflect its standing as an important stop along the legendary Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail.

Visitors will find ample practice facilities including spacious driving ranges and dedicated putting greens that prepare players before stepping onto the courses. The clubhouse provides a comfortable setting to relax before or after a round, reflecting southern hospitality. Golf carts are equipped with GPS and enforced 90-degree cart path rules to maintain course conditions.

Capitol Hill’s varied layouts appeal to adventurous golfers ranging from mid to low handicaps eager to experience diverse shot requirements over 54 holes within a single venue. Walkers, well-supported by the terrain and paths, can enjoy a satisfying day on the course, though southern heat and humidity call for proper hydration. Those planning a visit should anticipate a full day of golf that combines rigorous play with moments of quiet beauty along Alabama’s rolling woodlands and open stretches. RTJ Capitol Hill ranks as a signature destination for players pursuing a robust golf experience in Central Alabama.

Course Highlights

Capitol Hill showcases three unique courses: the Senator’s links-style layout with its vast bunkers and wind-influenced play; the Judge’s tree-lined fairways and balanced parkland challenges; and the Legislator’s nuanced greens and elevation changes. The integration of GPS-enabled carts with strict cart path rules preserves course integrity, while generous practice areas enhance preparation. Each course reflects Robert Trent Jones’ design philosophy emphasizing strategic shot-making and rhythm.

Course is great, the policies at RTJ are insanity. If there’s lightning on their radar anywhere from Pike Road to Wetumpka to Autauga, they shut down the course. 6 of my last 6 trips have been canceled or seriously delayed because of this policy and on a couple of occasions, late in the afternoon, the staff just used it as an excuse to shut everything down and leave early. They also won’t refund you, they’ll just give you a rain check. Meanwhile, all course staff are still out working and doing their thing on the course. Zero common sense, bad handling of the situations when they happen.

I had the opportunity to play RTJ Capitol Hill the other day and was lucky enough to get in a double round too. So let me start with the check in process. Seamless and very professional. Drop your clubs and then drive to park. There is a cart shuttle to take you back to the clubhouse. This was a first for the RTJ courses I have played previously. I got some breakfast before teeing off and had the classic. Very tasty and priced very reasonably too. Warm up area was nice. Plenty of space and turf conditions were decent too. The Senator - Links Style but not too penal if you keep it play. It you have an errant tee shot you can pay the price. 140 bunkers too. Some places in some pretty precarious places too. The only disappointing part was the green conditions but on the plus side with all the rain they had this was a 90 degree off cart path course, which will come into play for my review of the Judge. Saw the beverage cart 6 times and had the Marshall deliver a chilled towel too, this will come into play later. Judge - very friendly starter but he told us there was a Marshall, which I was excited about because of my earlier experience however he never showed once. Very disappointed!! Although 90 degrees on the Senator not so for the Judge this making it a very long and painfully slow second 18. I forgot to mention how hot and humid it was so I was expecting to see the beverage cart like we did on the Senator; however I had to call the clubhouse 3 times before seeing her and to say she was less than pleasant would be a massive understatement!! :-( Then everyone of the water cans were bone dry. This is why I gave the course a 3- star rating. Very disappointed for the caliber and quality I was expecting to experience for a RTJ bucket list course. I hope your experience is better than mine after driving 4 hours this experience left a sour taste in my mouth.

Played all 3 courses over Columbus Day weekend. Facilities are great with multiple putting greens and well maintained range. Each of the Judge, Legislator and Senator pose their own unique challenges and beauty. Beware of any downhill putt especially on the Legislator! It was a perfect setting for a 16 person Ryder Cup format. My only knock on the course are the golf carts with shut off and only allow you to go backwards when you get in a restricted area. It was quite annoying! I will definitely come back and play here again!

Played the senator course - links style . Conditions were very good typical of all RTJ trail courses I’ve played.. carts have GPS maps-good..carts get disabled temporarily if you get within 100 yards of greens or enter front of fairways— basically enforced 90’ cart path rules which keeps conditions good. Facilities great . Rec buying trail card for really good rates !!
