Ballantrae Golf Club

Pelham, Alabama, USACentral Alabama

Ballantrae Golf Club in Pelham, Alabama, features an 18-hole semi-private layout that combines natural rolling terrain with fast, contoured greens. Known for its thoughtful design and well-maintained conditions, the course offers a rewarding challenge for a wide range of golfers.

Course Overview

Ballantrae Golf Club offers a compelling blend of challenge and charm set against the rolling terrain of Pelham, Alabama. This 18-hole, semi-private course stretches just over 7,000 yards and demands precision and strategy from every player. The layout takes full advantage of the natural undulations, weaving through mature trees and incorporating subtle water hazards that call for thoughtful shot placement rather than sheer power.

The course’s design strikes a deliberate balance between test and reward, with greens known for their quick pace and intricate contours. Several holes stand out for their complexity, especially the par 5 second hole with its sharp 90-degree dogleg and a green that repels easy birdies. The unusually shaped greens on holes like 4, 7, and 14 present subtle challenges, encouraging players to consider slopes and elevation changes carefully. The par 3 14th hole is a prime example of Ballantrae’s knack for combining natural beauty with demanding golf. Its strategic bunker guarding the left and water to the right shifts any round into a cerebral exercise.

Maintenance throughout the course consistently earns praise, with well-kept fairways and smooth, fast greens reflecting the club’s commitment to high standards. The overall setting sits comfortably within a residential golf community, offering scenic vistas that reward those who pause to take in the surroundings between shots.

Beyond the course, Ballantrae’s clubhouse and dining facilities elevate the experience. The Fireside Grill, with panoramic windows overlooking fairways, provides an inviting atmosphere perfect for relaxation after a round or mid-day visits for remote work. Service at the club is routinely described as attentive and warm, rounding out a visit that feels personal and well-considered.

For golfers planning a trip, walking is encouraged, and sturdy shoes are recommended given the varying terrain. Weekends may see slower play due to dual tee starts, so early tee times offer a more fluid pace. Whether you are seeking competitive test or approachable fun, Ballantrae Golf Club presents a diverse, engaging challenge shaped by natural Alabama landscape and thoughtful design.

Course Highlights

Distinctive greens with unique contours on holes 2, 4, 7, and 14, combined with natural elevation changes and strategic bunkering, create a course that rewards thoughtful shot-making. The clubhouse’s Fireside Grill provides stunning views of the course and a welcoming environment for post-round relaxation.

Gorgeous, semi-private club. This course if located in the midst of a residential golf community. It's a beautiful area and both the clubhouse and course are top notch. The greens aren't too big and they're very fast. They have a great mix of par 3s, par 4s and par 5s.

This golf course is approximately 15 minutes off. I 65. If you’re driving anywhere close to Pelham, Alabama do yourself a favor and stop by. You will not be disappointing . You’d be hard-pressed to find a better golf course for the price they charged. (Approximate $50). It was wonderful experience. From the Teebox to the greens everything well-maintained, and then excellent condition. I’ve spent a lot of money over the years playing expensive and shoddily maintained golf courses around the US, this, by far is one of the most scenic and beautiful courses I’ve played in Alabama. What a great experience. Can’t wait to come back.

Course is usually in good condition. Greens are quick. Several of the greens have unique designs; #s 2, 4, 7, 8,9, 11,12, 14,16 in particular. Hole #2's green is very tough, because of it birdies can be scarce on this 90 degree dogleg par 5. #11 was changed from a great par 5 into an ugly par 4 in my opinion. Prepare yourself for adversity when you tee it up on the extremely difficult par 3 14th hole. A huge bunker sits on the left side of the green. The green itself gas a huge mound in the middle of it. Did I forget to tell you be aware of the water lurking to the right. And the green slopes in that direction? Yes, bogey is a good score here. Be prepared for a fairly slow round on weekends as a dual #1, #10 tee off is used until around 9:30am.

The food at Fireside Grill is worth the drive up the hill to Ballantrae. The view is amazing out the wall of windows overlooking the fairway and the patio. If you work remote, it is a wonderful place to take your computer, grab lunch, and work with a phenomenal view. Best secondary office location around!
