RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley

Birmingham, Alabama, USACentral Alabama

RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley delivers two championship 18-hole courses that blend rugged elevation and southern landscaping into memorable rounds. Featuring Bermuda and bent grass surfaces, this resort-style venue offers a competitive yet accessible test for golfers seeking varied terrain and thoughtful design.

Course Overview

Located in Birmingham, Alabama, RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley presents golfers with two distinct 18-hole championship courses that challenge with elevation changes and rich southern character. The Ridge Course, known for its dramatic topography, features Bermuda tees, fairways, and rough paired with bent grass greens, creating a unique playing surface combination that rewards strategy and shot precision. Elevations climb and dip throughout the layout, inviting players to navigate blind shots and test their distance control amid a vibrant landscape. The Valley Course offers a complementary experience with slightly gentler undulations and broad fairways framed by native pines and hardwoods, blending approachable design with demanding green complexes.

Both courses showcase a striking variety of holes, each offering challenges that appeal to a wide range of skill levels. The thoughtfully maintained greens hold well even in changing weather, allowing precision approaches and delicate putting strokes. Golfers find that the rolling terrain demands careful club selection, with wind adding an extra layer of complexity to the game.

As a resort-style destination embedded within the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Oxmoor Valley benefits from superb practice facilities, including an elevated driving range that tests distance judgment against the backdrop of the hilltop setting. The well-appointed clubhouse provides a welcoming atmosphere with amenities tailored to players’ needs, making it suitable for families, casual players, and tournament competitors alike.

Players should prepare for walking conditions that vary with elevation; comfortable shoes are essential to enjoy the course fully. Carts are available but the course encourages walking where possible for the closest connection to its landscape. Seasonal overseeding ensures lush playing surfaces, though visitors during these periods might encounter softer turf and wet conditions.

RTJ Golf Trail at Oxmoor Valley stands out as a destination where natural features shape the challenge and rhythm of play, promising a diverse golf experience enriched by southern charm and championship quality.

We went here to eat because my husband wanted to show me the golf course. The Grille at Oxmoor is the name. As you walk in not a single picture in the entire large space is level and there's huge chunks of peeling and chipped paint. Doesn't scream golf club to me. We sit at the bar and order lunch. I ordered a salad which came with completely rotten lettuce covered by 1/2 pound of cheese. Absolutely disgusting. I really tried to find a tiny bit of something edible and could not. When the server saw the rotten lettuce her only response was to ask my husband if he still wanted his salad which had not come out yet. She apologized but no one really seemed to care. Very bad impression of the food ethic here. I'd return for golf but not food ever! Will make sure we pack food if we go here to golf.

This place is 2 of the nicest golf courses that I have ever played. We went in early March of 2025 and everything was gorgeous. The greens were in perfect shape. The staff was very helpful and curtious and answered all our questions and we had plenty, since we had never been here before. I highly recommend a trip to here! You will not regret it!

Played the Ridge course in late February. Course was spectacular for winter golf, with overseed of tees, fairways, and greens to make it green. Extreme elevations and very challenging course made it memorable but very hard for average golfers. The range had you hit from the top of a hill, so hard to judge how far your ball lands.

Beautiful resort course but unfortunately we played this when they were over seeding their grass and we couldn’t drive our cart onto the fairway to our ball and it made play a lot longer. They also over watered the course and often we had to hit out of mud or mushy soft ground, and the greens were wet as well. With all of this I gave up on keeping score. I would have not played this course knowing these conditions, it is unfortunate because this was my first time playing a RTJ course. Putting all of this aside it was a beautiful day, friendly staff and great views on the course. The difficulty for me were the elevated greens. You have to be good knowing your distance/how far you can fly your ball, and with the greens being wet thankfully you were able to stick your shots. There were a lot of elevation changes and many blind spots which made it difficult. This course was very expensive to play so I am not sure if I would play it again. I would prefer to try other RTJ courses.

Played Oxmoor Valley Ridge today. Course is a rare blend of Bermuda tees, fairways and rough but bent grass greens. The elevation changes are definitely appealing to the eye. Greens would hold just about any shot and weren't as fast as I would like. Overall this a challenging but playable course that I would highly recommend.
