Course Overview

Set atop the Blue Ridge Mountains in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, the Highland Course at Primland offers a golf experience both commanding and intimate, shaped by its dramatic elevation and expansive ridgeline setting. This 18-hole championship layout stretches over 7,100 yards from the back tees, inviting players to navigate a demanding course that marries mountain golf’s rugged spirit with meticulous design and impeccable conditioning.

Approaching the Highland Course, the first sense is one of elevation and vastness. The fairways roll and climb along natural contours, delivering panoramic views that capture dense forest expanses and distant horizon lines. The course’s profile demands thoughtful club selection and strategic shot-making, as several holes present uphill blind approaches and downhill drives where the wind plays a subtle yet persistent role. Greens are expansive and often multi-tiered, testing both putting touch and mental resilience across pin positions that encourage aggressive thinking without reckless play.

Primland’s Highland Course balances challenge with playability, welcoming accomplished golfers while still rewarding those with moderate handicaps who embrace its unique terrain and scale. The Par 3s include a selection of beautiful, well-guarded greens that add variety and strategic depth throughout the round. Combined with tight fairways framed by mature hardwoods and occasional rocky outcroppings, the course constantly asks players to engage with the land thoughtfully.

The experience is further elevated by Primland’s amenities: a well-stocked practice facility with a driving range and short game areas provides ample preparation, while the clubhouse extends refined comfort with dining options that overlook the mountains. The Highland Course encourages walking, offering a genuine mountain golf adventure for those interested in absorbing the environment’s serenity and challenge without the interruption of carts.

For golfers seeking a distinctive mountain golf journey that combines scenic inspiration, physical engagement, and strategic complexity, the Highland Course at Primland stands as a rewarding destination. It invites players to measure themselves against not just a course, but the landscape itself, where every swing carries the pulse of the Blue Ridge.

Spectacular mountain course with truly top notch service. Great driving range and practice area, excellent pro shop with everything you would need, and a comfortable locker room. That course is beautiful and very challenging while being fun and approachable. The staff really stood out, everyone from the started to the pro to the beverage cart lady was very friendly, knowledgeable, and capable. Highly recommend this course.

Luxury amenities set on 12,000 pristine acres of Blue Ridge Mountain heaven. Set along the ridge atop the mountain, the Highlands course has some of the most breathtaking views you'll find anywhere.

For the buck you shell out to play here the course pretty much lives up to it. Played on July 31st and it was green as can be. Greens rolled nice. Very difficult to putt to some of those pin placements! Lots of blind uphill approach shots. Good selection of Par 3s. You will get your workout and moneys worth when you come to chop Primland! Magnificent condition and some great views along the way. I bet in the Fall this place is just amazing. If I was a millionaire like most of the other guests I would go play it every other month! Its a top notch place all around. 5 stars

The Highland Course at Primland demands accuracy off the tee — fairways are tight, and missing them often means dealing with steep slopes, thick rough, or worse. Elevation changes are constant and sometimes deceptive, making club selection tricky and adding pressure to every drive. Stray shots are punished, not just by distance lost, but by awkward lies and tough angles into firm, fast greens. This isn’t a course you can fake your way through. Even short holes can bite if you’re out of position. The layout rewards precise play and good decision-making, especially on approaches where slopes around the greens can funnel a decent shot into trouble fast. Beautiful, yes — but it’s a test, bring some extra balls. 😎 Views are stunning and the resort / staff are fantastic.

Highland course was immaculate. Played on 11-08 and the price was $150. The golf course has to be seen to be believed. Great vistas, incredible shot values, and greens that were rolling fast and true add up to a tremendous value. Move up a tee box from where you would normally play as the course has some tough driving holes. Nice pro shop and a sprawling dinner area with top-notch food. Overall, an experience not be missed if you are in the area. Difficult to get to the course on a crazy stretch of switchbacks but that just adds to the allure of the place.
