Southern Hills Golf Course

Hot Springs, South Dakota, USABlack Hills

Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs, SD, features an 18-hole public layout with a distinct split personality: a traditional, precise front nine leads into a rugged, strategic back nine. This Black Hills gem combines firm, contoured greens with elevation shifts that test every aspect of your game.

Course Overview

Southern Hills Golf Course, situated in the rugged beauty of Hot Springs, South Dakota, offers an 18-hole public layout that combines challenging play with scenic northern plains charm. This course presents a dual personality: the front nine eases players into a traditional, measured setting where precision is rewarded, while the back nine ventures into wilder terrain demanding strategic thinking and shot-making versatility. Elevation changes across the course provide exhilarating vantage points and test club selection, encouraging players to master both fades and draws to navigate its varied contours.

The well-maintained fairways are bordered by native grasses and occasional clusters of trees, creating a compelling contrast between open and tight lies. Greens at Southern Hills are firm but receptive, prized for their true roll and subtle breaks that require thoughtful reading. Small and contoured, these putting surfaces elevate the challenge for golfers aiming to shave strokes off their round.

This course appeals to a broad range of players, from those seeking a fair but stimulating experience to more seasoned golfers looking to capitalize on risk-reward opportunities in the back nine’s rugged layout. The course’s dynamics encourage a flexible game plan, rewarding strategic patience on early holes and creative shot shaping when the landscape opens up.

Staff at Southern Hills earn praise for their approachable and knowledgeable service, enhancing the overall round with helpful insights and a welcoming spirit. Parking and practice facilities support a comfortable visit, while the clubhouse offers basic amenities that align with the course’s laid-back, nature-focused atmosphere.

Visitors contemplating their first round should prepare for varying conditions: some tee boxes show room for leveling, and cart paths reveal the course’s outdoor authenticity. Walking is possible but may require sturdy footwear given the natural undulations and occasional rough sections. Players new to Southern Hills are encouraged to bring a versatile club selection, as long drives can carry beyond safe landing zones but precision is crucial, especially as you advance onto the more demanding back nine.

Southern Hills provides a memorable golfing experience in the Black Hills region, blending straightforward accessibility with a rugged countryside challenge that leaves a lasting impression.

This is the best, well-cared for public course dollar/fun per yard. The front nine takes you through a challenging yet forgiving need for fades and draws. It advances every skill level with options to cut for a 150yd iron shot or to play it safe with the hybrid fairway. The elevation changes provides players with high five opportunities going around and over hills. The back nine feels like the course designer went off leash. The opportunities to be alone out in the wild teeing off into unforgiving yet playful landscape is of a dream. Taking risks on shots are rewarded though trouble if not strategic. Don’t skimp on reading the greens - a lot to roll with here. To add to the course, Sony + Jill (sp), among other team members such as Jay cutting the greens, are some of the friendliest staff. Club members such as Wally, Ron, Steve, Tom, + others are some genuine folk who care about this track. This is a well run, well taken care of golf course for the city of Hot Springs. 10/10, highly recommend. Can’t wait to run it back next year. Tip: If you can, play from the blues; some of the best tee shots are there.

First time playing this course and first time playing “up North” this year. It’s always difficult switching from “thicker” Arizona greens to northern greens and this course was a somewhat expected shock! The staff was very welcoming and took the time to explain the course layout since it was our first visit. Some of the hole to hole transitions are confusing indeed! We found really nice, fast, contoured greens that got the best of us. Overall a really well maintained course, but it does have multiple personalities! The predictable traditional layout of the front nine lulled us into comfort and the out of this world back nine made us realize what a challenging course can be like! No way both nines were designed by the same person! All in all, a great day out. Well done Southern Hills staff!

Course is phenomenal, so much fun. The rating is 2 stars due to Jill the manager, extremely rude and un-professional. She will definitely be a detriment to this golf course..

Spent the week in the Black Hills and looked for courses to play in the area and this.one looked the.most scenic, it was! Even saw a few deer during.my round. Price was a little high but course was in great condition. Greens were firm but receptive, rolled true and not too fast. Fairways are tight, greens are small. Some tee boxes could be fixed (leveled), cart paths need some work. Would have liked a more detailed scorecard, yardage to bunkers or landing areas would be helpful for first time visitors. Found myself teeing off with my 3 & 5 woods, my driver would go through the fairway even when I was cutting the corner. Other than that I enjoyed my round at Southern Hills.
