Hapuna Golf Course Review: Challenging Golf with Stunning Hawaiian Views
Hapuna Golf Course at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel challenges golfers with an 18-hole layout shaped by rolling hills and Pacific views. Its firm, fast greens and strategic elevation changes offer a stimulating yet rewarding round in a striking Hawaiian setting.
Course Overview
Hapuna Golf Course at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in Waimea, Hawaii, offers a distinctive and invigorating golf experience marked by its bold terrain and sweeping Pacific vistas. This 18-hole championship layout provides players with a course that tests strategic shot-making amid natural elevation changes and lush Hawaiian surroundings. Although the course does not sit directly on the shoreline, many holes offer magnificent water views that shift with each step, drawing golfers’ eyes toward the horizon while demanding precise drives down often narrow fairways.
The layout is a blend of mountain and coastal design elements, with rolling hills creating uphill and downhill challenges that add complexity to club selection. Fairways are generally well-maintained, though some areas show wear consistent with heavy play and weather exposure. Greens are a defining feature here, known for their firmness, true roll, and significant undulations. Front-nine greens tend to be faster and more demanding, requiring careful approach shots and deft putting, while the back nine greens offer a slightly more forgiving pace but retain challenging breaks. Players unfamiliar with the topography benefit from referencing the course map and using rangefinders to assess distances accurately.
Hapuna’s bunkers present subtle but important hazards, often shallow with limited sand depth, urging golfers to adapt their recovery shots carefully. Golf carts equipped with GPS ensure navigation across the varied landscape is straightforward, complementing the course’s flow.
Beyond the course, the resort’s pro shop offers a well-curated selection of apparel and equipment rentals, including quality TaylorMade sets. The practice facilities are comprehensive, featuring a grass driving range and putting greens, making preparation seamless.
Visitors appreciate the welcoming atmosphere from staff and the smooth pace of play. While the course challenges even low handicaps, it remains accessible to confident mid-handicap players eager to engage in a dynamic and visually rich round. Seasonal conditions can affect green speed and turf health, so checking ahead for course updates is advisable. Overall, Hapuna Golf Course stands as an excellent destination for golfers seeking a memorable Hawaiian round that combines natural beauty with competitive play.
Course Highlights
Hapuna’s signature mix of rolling elevation and coastal scenery shapes a unique challenge. The course requires tactical shot planning, especially on the firm greens known for their fast speeds and subtle breaks. Spectacular ocean views frame many holes, enhancing the experience without distracting from focused play.

I played a round here yesterday sort of last minute and I'm really glad I did! Staying at the Marriott got me a nice discount so my round was reasonable playing around 3pm. The pace of play was excellent, which was great for me since I was playing by myself. Just about every hole seemed to have water views. I think I might have taken as many pictures as I hit shots because the scenery was amazing. The course layout was interesting and had some significant elevation changes throughout. Since this was my first time playing, I really had to look at the course map and use my rangefinder to assess where to hit my drives as some of the fairways were tight. The greens overall were in pretty good shape. On the front nine they seemed to be faster, and I mean really fast. On the back, the greens were in a little better condition and not quite as fast but certainly not slow (more my ideal). Because of all of the slope that the greens had, if you don't place your ball close to the pin, it makes for some very interesting reads. The fairways were in okay shape. Some were beaten up in spots but overall were good. Fortunately I didn't find a bunker all day but did hit a few practice shots out of a couple. They were a bit thin and not much sand to work with but not a problem. You just have to adjust your shot accordingly. The golf carts looked pretty worn but functioned just fine. They did have GPS which was nice. Overall, I highly recommend this course!

Played: March 2024 Green Fee: $195 Included - Golf Cart - Range Balls/Grass Range - Full Practice Area - Two Packs of TaylorMade Tour Response Balls Although you don’t get close to the water, the views more than make up for it. The course is in really good condition. Greens are very difficult - they roll true and feature a lot of adulation. With all that’s included, the condition of the course, and the stunning views - the price is very fair.

My wife and I played here today and it was superb. Every staff person greeted me with a smile and made me feel welcome. The course is outstanding! What a tough track! Lots of blind spots and more hills that Apple mountain. You won’t be disappointed.

Beautiful course. When I called and made a tee time I was told that the greens were recently punched. Greens were still in good shape. I wish all golf courses would give you a heads up when greens are aerated. The staff was friendly. I had to rent clubs and those TaylorMade clubs were in great shape and in new condition. If given the opportunity to return, I will not hesitate to play this course again.

It turns out that a certain MBL top star's villa is under construction. The course is difficult from the blue tees if the wind blows. It's a very good course
