Volcano Golf Course

Volcano, Hawaii, USABig Island

Volcano Golf Course invites players to experience golf at over 4,000 feet in the heart of Hawaii’s volcanic terrain. Its friendly, wide fairways and strategic bunkering make it an accessible yet engaging course amid striking island scenery.

Course Overview

Perched more than 4,000 feet above sea level, Volcano Golf Course offers a distinctive golfing experience set against Hawaii's dramatic volcanic landscape. This 18-hole public course blends approachable play with moments that challenge every golfer’s shotmaking. Its wide fairways provide ample room for less experienced players to find comfort off the tee, while strategically placed bunkers and subtle elevation changes invite lower handicaps to test their precision throughout the round.

The course’s layout unfolds across rolling terrain shaped by volcanic activity, creating an atmosphere both rugged and serene. Players encounter panoramic views that stretch across lush valleys and distant ocean glimpses, lending a striking backdrop uncommon to island golf. The greens are generally receptive yet varied in contour, calling for thoughtful approach shots and careful reads.

Volcano Golf Course welcomes visitors with a friendly local vibe, supported by a staff attentive to players’ needs. Rentals and snack options are available, making it easy for travelers without their own gear to enjoy the round. Amenities include a modest clubhouse facility that serves as a gathering point before and after play. Walkers find the course comfortable underfoot, but given the elevation and island climate, carrying water and wearing breathable attire is advisable.

The course’s setting above the tropical lowlands means winds can influence shot selection, adding an element of unpredictability that tests tempo and adaptability. Ample wide landing areas reward conservative drives, while four par-3s showcase the green complexes that demand accuracy rather than length. Notably, several holes skirt native Hawaiian flora where Nene geese roam freely, lending a sense of place unique to this island gem.

Whether a visitor seeks a relaxed round amidst striking scenery or a spirited challenge on a well-maintained layout, Volcano Golf Course offers a memorable golf adventure. Its blend of natural beauty, manageable difficulties, and welcoming atmosphere positions it as a rewarding destination for golfers of most skill levels exploring Hawaii’s Big Island.

Course Highlights

The course features expansive, wide fairways framed by volcanic rock and native Hawaiian plants. Several holes border habitat frequented by Nene geese, offering unique wildlife encounters. Elevated tees provide sweeping views of the island's valleys and distant ocean. The layout balances playable sections for beginners with strategically placed bunkers and elevation shifts that test more experienced players.

If you hate sweating while playing on beach courses then this is the place for you. 4000 foot elevation and playing on top of the most active volcano in the world makes this course a unique playing experience. This couse plays like a links course with cool steady breezes, undulating fairways and well kept greens.

Hoping and being patient for a Clubhouse, and lavatories with running water to be built. We used to go Waikoloa for the weekend, and stay at Airbnb's, but too many head-on collisions. We'd like to go to Volcano Golf course, since we live in Puna. Guess just gotta be patient.

As a resident of the Big Island, I would say this golf course is a ripe off. We played 9 holes for approximately $100. That’s for 2 adults and a 7 year old. In addition, when you pay that much, you would expect to have a pleasant bathroom experience but the port-a-potties were not emptied. It was so disgusting. There are no other toilet options. I would not recommend going here as a resident of the Big Island.

Maybe my favorite course on island. Fun and exciting layout and a great vibe. Super friendly folks all around. Greens, fairways, and rough are all good enough. If you have a problem with it, you gotta go somewhere else and spend 5x. I’ll stay here and roll it in the fairway with a smile on my face. Golf how it should be. I’ll be back!

Great golf at 4k above sea level. Friendly staff, don’t have any gear, they have everything you need. The course enjoyable, with gear views, and some challenging angles.
