Course Overview

Hilo Municipal Golf Course presents an approachable yet engaging 18-hole layout that welcomes golfers of all levels to experience the charm of Hawaii’s Big Island without leaving the town. Located at 340 Haihai St in Hilo, this public course showcases a refreshing blend of traditional parkland elements infused with subtle tropical influences. The fairways are well-maintained, lined with mature trees and native flora that frame each hole, while gentle elevation changes create a natural rhythm to the round without overwhelming players looking for an enjoyable day on the links.

Offering a total par of 72, the course stretches to a modest yardage that balances challenge with playability. Its design encourages thoughtful shot-making rather than raw power, making it inviting for beginners and mid-handicappers, yet nuanced enough to satisfy more experienced players. The greens tend to be receptive and well-kept, guarded by strategically placed bunkers that add strategic interest without feeling punitive.

Visitors will find ample space at the driving range, praised for clean, well-spaced stalls and affordable buckets of balls, an ideal warm-up before navigating the course. The clubhouse provides a casual atmosphere, including a restaurant with local fare favored by both players and residents. The friendly staff often extend warm hospitality, accommodating players with diverse needs, including assistance for those requiring walking help.

Playing at Hilo Municipal promises sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, where occasional trade winds subtly influence shot trajectories and encourage golfers to fine-tune their game. This course stands out as one of the best public options on the island, combining accessibility, reasonable rates, and a fun round that captures the spirit of Hawaiian golf.

For planning purposes, walking is encouraged and easy due to the relatively flat terrain, but sturdy footwear is recommended given occasional tropical moisture. Tee times are available to the public, and early mornings often provide the best pace of play and cooler conditions. While the course embraces its community roots, respect for course etiquette is vital to maintaining its enjoyable environment for all.

Muni use to be the "ultimate pasture golf experience" until they jazzed up the place, now you better hit the driving range and warm up before you go out! Goodbye pasture, hello nice greener! Aloha 🀟🀟🀟🀟

Always a great experience on this course. My husband walks with a cane and the staff has been so kind and accommodating to him. The food at the restaurant is great too! πŸ‘πŸ»

If your local I'm sure it's a great place. Don't bother otherwise. Course is ok, range is cheap and good. Visited hawii long enough to get sick of being taxed exta fees for being a fellow American but from a different state.

Fairly decent course for the price. UPDATE: I changed my review stars from 3 to 1 because I keep seeing so many golfers urinating on the golf course. Pilau. And seems like the Course managers and County P&R managers allow it even after they’ve been informed. It’s against Hawaii law to urinate in public places. πŸ™„

Excellent well maintained and clean driving range. There are plenty of driving range spots with good spacing. $4 for a bucket of balls is a good deal. Ample parking. Recommend.
