Hapuna Golf Course at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

Waimea, Hawaii, USABig Island Coast

Hapuna Golf Course at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel delivers an 18-hole resort experience marked by rolling volcanic terrain, Pacific Ocean views, and challenging greens that reward precise approach shots. Its natural elevation changes and coastal winds create a playing experience both enjoyable for casual golfers and demanding for low handicaps.

Course Overview

Positioned on Hawaii’s Big Island, Hapuna Golf Course welcomes players to an 18-hole championship layout that challenges and inspires in equal measure. This resort course is designed to integrate with the natural volcanic contours and sweeping ocean vistas that define this coastal region. While the course doesn’t run directly along the shoreline, nearly every hole offers a glance toward the Pacific, framing the round with expansive blue horizons and island breezes that influence shot selection and tempo.

Hapuna’s terrain features notable elevation shifts, demanding careful club choice and strategy, particularly from elevated tees and through fairways that thread between clusters of native flora. The split personality of the greens calls for precision; the front nine’s faster putting surfaces test speed control, while the back nine offers slightly softer, yet still challenging, greens boasting significant undulations and slopes. Navigating these breaks rewards those who spend time studying pin positions and green complexes.

Fairways maintain solid conditions throughout the course, although some wear is visible in higher-traffic zones. The bunkers, while fewer in number, serve as tactical hazards with modest sand depth that require a deft touch when escaping. The course’s natural layout and subtly sculpted features promote walkability, though the hilly terrain suggests sturdy footwear for comfort. Golf carts are equipped with GPS systems that assist with navigation and distance measurement, streamlining pace-of-play on this demanding route.

The clubhouse at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel provides a full-service golf shop and practice facility to prepare players ahead of their rounds. The staff’s attentive hospitality adds a welcoming dimension to the experience, helping both first-timers and seasoned golfers feel at ease.

Hapuna Golf Course appeals to a broad range of golfers — from those seeking an approachable resort challenge to low handicappers eager for complex green reads and elevation-driven strategy. Planning a visit during early afternoon offers pleasant trade winds and sunlight that highlight the ocean backdrop without excessive heat. Equipped with natural beauty and strategic depth, Hapuna delivers a memorable round where skill and scenery converge.

Course Highlights

Hapuna’s strategic use of volcanic elevation changes and ocean vistas shape a dynamic round. The front nine’s fast, firm greens contrast with softer, heavily contoured back nine greens, rewarding careful putts. Fairways weave through natural undulations with bunkers positioned to challenge accuracy rather than penalize overly. The course’s design leverages coastal trade winds to introduce a subtle but consistent test to distance control. Its integration with the natural volcanic landscape distinguishes the playing experience.

Played: March 2024 Green Fee: $195 Included - Golf Cart - Range Balls/Grass Range - Full Practice Area - Two Packs of TaylorMade Tour Response Balls Although you don’t get close to the water, the views more than make up for it. The course is in really good condition. Greens are very difficult - they roll true and feature a lot of adulation. With all that’s included, the condition of the course, and the stunning views - the price is very fair.

My wife and I played here today and it was superb. Every staff person greeted me with a smile and made me feel welcome. The course is outstanding! What a tough track! Lots of blind spots and more hills that Apple mountain. You won’t be disappointed.

It turns out that a certain MBL top star's villa is under construction. The course is difficult from the blue tees if the wind blows. It's a very good course

I played a round here yesterday sort of last minute and I'm really glad I did! Staying at the Marriott got me a nice discount so my round was reasonable playing around 3pm. The pace of play was excellent, which was great for me since I was playing by myself. Just about every hole seemed to have water views. I think I might have taken as many pictures as I hit shots because the scenery was amazing. The course layout was interesting and had some significant elevation changes throughout. Since this was my first time playing, I really had to look at the course map and use my rangefinder to assess where to hit my drives as some of the fairways were tight. The greens overall were in pretty good shape. On the front nine they seemed to be faster, and I mean really fast. On the back, the greens were in a little better condition and not quite as fast but certainly not slow (more my ideal). Because of all of the slope that the greens had, if you don't place your ball close to the pin, it makes for some very interesting reads. The fairways were in okay shape. Some were beaten up in spots but overall were good. Fortunately I didn't find a bunker all day but did hit a few practice shots out of a couple. They were a bit thin and not much sand to work with but not a problem. You just have to adjust your shot accordingly. The golf carts looked pretty worn but functioned just fine. They did have GPS which was nice. Overall, I highly recommend this course!

Beautiful course. When I called and made a tee time I was told that the greens were recently punched. Greens were still in good shape. I wish all golf courses would give you a heads up when greens are aerated. The staff was friendly. I had to rent clubs and those TaylorMade clubs were in great shape and in new condition. If given the opportunity to return, I will not hesitate to play this course again.
