About this landmark
Scenic Mountain Pass at Dallas Divide
Dallas Divide, located in southwestern Colorado near Ridgway, offers a breathtaking natural mountain pass that provides stunning views of the San Juan Mountains. This scenic spot uniquely marks the watershed boundary between the Dolores and Uncompahgre River basins. The divide’s landscape features a striking contrast of dramatic rugged peaks with snow-capped summits against rolling hills rich with autumn-colored aspens and evergreens.
The area is renowned for the grandeur of nearby peaks including Mount Sneffels, one of Colorado’s most recognizable fourteeners, whose sheer rock faces and glaciers create an eye-catching backdrop. The Dallas Divide itself sits at around 8,970 feet elevation and is easily accessible by State Highway 62, making it a popular and convenient stop for travelers seeking panoramic mountain views.
The vegetation around the divide shifts from dense forests to open meadows where wildflowers bloom in warmer months, while fall transforms the area with vibrant yellows and golds from quaking aspens, offering spectacular photo opportunities. Wildlife sightings may include deer, elk, and occasionally mountain goats.
Historically, the pass has served as a route connecting the valleys and towns in the region, and its name traces back to early settlers in the area. While not a major hiking destination itself, it serves as an entry point to various outdoor activities in the San Juan National Forest.
Dallas Divide stands out because of its accessibility combined with dramatic scenery and a dynamic seasonal palette. Whether driving through or stopping to take in the views, it showcases Colorado’s rugged alpine beauty and colorful landscapes in an effortless and welcoming way.
