Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Scenic Wonders of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, located in Zhangjiajie city within Hunan province, China, offers one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the planet. Famous for its towering sandstone pillars, which soar hundreds of meters into the sky, this park stands apart as a natural marvel in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. These dramatic vertical formations are often shrouded by mist, creating scenes that feel otherworldly—enchanting enough to inspire the “Hallelujah Mountains” in the film Avatar. Besides the cliffs, the park holds dense forests, deep ravines, and transparent waterfalls that accentuate its rugged beauty.

Key highlights include more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars rising sharply from the ground, some exceeding 200 meters, creating a remarkable skyline unlike anywhere else in the region. The Bailong Elevator—a glass lift clinging to a cliff face—is the world’s tallest outdoor elevator and offers staggering bird’s-eye views. Nearby, the Tianmen Mountain glass skywalk demands courage and grants panoramic views of valleys and peaks. Rich biodiversity thrives here, from evergreen foliage to native wildlife, making the park a fascinating place for nature lovers.

Established as China’s first national forest park in 1982, Zhangjiajie continues to draw visitors eager to witness its unique geology and tranquil forest environment. Trails range from gentle walks suitable for families to steep climbs for the adventurous, with well-maintained paths and convenient transportation options helping guests enjoy the vast, scenic grounds.

Whether admired from a cable car or wandered on foot, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park promises unforgettable sights that stay long in memory.
