Thermal Springs & Heritage at Cave and Basin National Historic Site

Cave and Basin National Historic Site in Banff, Alberta, marks the birthplace of Canada’s national park system and offers visitors a glimpse into both natural wonder and cultural heritage. This landmark features hot mineral springs bubbling up from beneath the Earth’s surface inside a distinctive cave formation surrounded by lush wetland and mountain scenery. The sight of geothermal vents releasing steam into the crisp mountain air creates a vivid connection between geology and history.

The cave’s emerald-green waters are home to the rare Banff springs snail, found nowhere else on Earth, making this site ecologically significant. Visitors follow a wide, accessible boardwalk that winds over thermal pools and sulphur marshes, providing close-up views while protecting the fragile environment. The site also includes an interpretive centre where engaging exhibits outline the role of the springs in the development of the Canadian national parks, along with Indigenous history and early European discovery in the late 19th century.

Beyond natural features, Cave and Basin holds cultural importance as a place long revered by Indigenous peoples for its healing waters and spiritual value. This blend of natural beauty, unique wildlife, and rich history makes the location a fascinating stop for those interested in the origins of conservation in Canada. Its year-round accessibility through Banff’s downtown area adds convenience for visitors eager to learn about this remarkable park legacy and enjoy fresh mountain air.

Whether pausing beside steaming hot pools or viewing interactive exhibits, guests encounter a quiet, historic spot where nature’s warmth meets the story of Canada’s parks—and the springs still flow, just as they did over a century ago.
