About Lerderderg State Park

Lerderderg State Park is located about 60 kilometers northwest of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. It covers an extensive area along the Lerderderg River, cutting through steep gorges and sandstone cliffs, within the Great Dividing Range foothills. The park features diverse landscapes including open woodlands dominated by eucalyptus species, dense riverine vegetation, and dry forest ecosystems. This variety supports abundant native fauna such as kangaroos, wallabies, possums, and various bird species including wedge-tailed eagles and parrots. Historically, the area was significant for gold mining activities during the 19th century, remnants of which can still be found. The park's steep terrain provides challenging hiking and trail running routes, as well as mountain biking trails along old mining tracks. Popular features include the dramatic Lerderderg Gorge, with its cliffs and secluded swimming holes. Visitors are attracted by the natural beauty, opportunities for multi-day camping, and the chance to experience variable terrain that ranges from river flats to elevated ridges. Lerderderg State Park also has a remote feel despite its proximity to urban centers, offering a natural refuge and an accessible experience in Victoria’s bushland environment.
