About Eagle Nest Lake State Park

Eagle Nest Lake State Park, located in northern New Mexico, is a stunning expanse centered around a high-altitude reservoir encircled by the scenic peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Formed as a result of damming the Cieneguilla Creek, the lake serves as a key habitat for various fish species including trout and kokanee salmon, making it a popular spot for anglers. The area around the lake supports diverse wildlife, offering opportunities for spotting bald eagles and other bird species. Established in 2004, the park is a relatively recent addition to New Mexico’s protected areas, providing a tranquil escape with its open, expansive waters and surrounding landscapes. Visitors can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities year-round, including hiking, boating, and camping. Winter transforms the park into a serene, icy wonderland suitable for ice fishing and cross-country skiing.
