About Little Miami National Scenic River

Little Miami National Scenic River

The Little Miami National Scenic River flows approximately 76 miles through southwestern Ohio, from Clarksville in Greene County to its confluence with the Ohio River near Cincinnati. This designated National Scenic River preserves one of Ohio's most intact and ecologically diverse river systems, featuring limestone bluffs, rolling hills, dense forests, and prime habitat for numerous native species. The river corridor supports diverse plant and animal communities, including several rare freshwater mussels, migratory birds, and river otters. Historically, the valley was home to Native American settlements and later played a role in early European-American settlement patterns, with remnants like historic mills and covered bridges found nearby. Outdoor enthusiasts come for paddling opportunities encompassing canoeing and kayaking along calm to moderate river stretches, as well as sections for more skilled paddlers. The river corridor also incorporates adjacent hiking and biking trails, including parts of the Little Miami Bike Trail, a popular route connecting several towns and parks. Fishing is another draw, with species such as smallmouth bass, catfish, and muskellunge inhabiting the waters. The protected status ensures conservation of scenic river views, water quality, and recreational access, making it a valued destination for families, anglers, paddlers, and nature lovers. Visitors appreciate the mixture of natural beauty, accessible recreation, and historical character preserved by local, state, and federal agencies working together to maintain the river's free-flowing condition and ecological health.
