About Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge spans nearly 20,000 acres in the Ruby Valley of eastern Nevada. The refuge's landscape is dominated by extensive wetlands, open marshes, and riparian corridors fed by groundwater and seasonal streams from the surrounding mountains. These water-rich areas provide critical breeding, feeding, and resting habitat for over 200 species of birds, including large populations of ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, and shorebirds. The refuge also supports populations of mule deer, pronghorn antelope, coyotes, and numerous amphibians and fish species. Originally established in 1938 to protect migratory birds, Ruby Lake has evolved into a premier refuge with a mosaic of pristine habitats that contrast with the arid high desert environment. Visitors to Ruby Lake enjoy opportunities for birdwatching, wildlife photography, fishing, and nature study. The refuge features a visitor center with interpretive displays about the area's ecology and wildlife. Hiking trails and several accessible observation decks provide excellent vantage points. The quiet isolation of the refuge and the seasonal abundance of migratory birds make it a favorite destination for naturalists and outdoor enthusiasts seeking solitude and rich wildlife experiences. Its remoteness and fragile habitats mean that responsible use and awareness of conservation rules are essential to preserve this important wetland ecosystem.
