About Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest Park spans over 630 hectares at the foothills of the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. The park’s geography includes ancient woodlands, river valleys along the Shimna River, and rugged mountain foothills, featuring diverse habitats that support a variety of native flora and fauna. Established in 1955, it was the first state forest park in Northern Ireland and is managed by Forest Service Northern Ireland. The forest’s diverse ecosystem includes species such as red squirrels, roe deer, and numerous birds, as well as vibrant wildflowers and ancient oak and pine stands. Historically, the land was part of the medieval estate of the Magennis clan and later developed by the 18th-century Montgomery family, who constructed follies and the notable Hermitage, a waterside grotto reflecting 18th-century landscaping tastes. Recreational opportunities include extensive walking trails along forest roads and riverside paths, mountain biking routes, and designated picnic areas. Film enthusiasts may recognize the park’s dramatic landscapes from productions such as HBO’s "Game of Thrones." The park’s mixture of natural beauty, historic sites, and well-maintained facilities attracts families, hikers, bird watchers, and outdoor photographers throughout the year. Visitor amenities include parking, picnic spots, and waymarked trails, making it accessible for casual visitors and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
