About Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area

Jasper-Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Area spans approximately 8,000 acres across Jasper and Pulaski counties in northwest Indiana. Established in 1943, the area consists primarily of wetlands, prairies, and open farmlands managed to support a diverse range of wildlife and plant species. Topographically, the landscape features glacially formed sand dunes and lowland marshes that provide critical habitat for waterfowl, upland game birds, and numerous other species. The site is internationally recognized as one of the best inland stopover points for migrating sandhill cranes, attracting thousands of bird enthusiasts each fall. In addition to birdwatching, Jasper-Pulaski offers opportunities for hunting deer, waterfowl, and upland game, as well as fishing, hiking, and wildlife photography. Managed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the area includes designated public hunting zones and preserves areas for non-consumptive recreation. Trails wind through woodlands and wetland habitats, with observation towers and blinds facilitating close wildlife viewing. Jasper-Pulaski’s combination of open habitats and managed water levels creates ideal conditions for migratory birds in the fall and spring. The area’s accessibility from nearby cities and towns, combined with well-maintained facilities, makes it a favored spot for outdoor enthusiasts year-round.
