Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve offers a unique exploration of wetlands in Alabama, rich with biodiversity and outdoor educational opportunities.
Ebenezer Swamp Ecological Preserve is located in Shelby County, Alabama. Encompassing approximately 60 acres, this swamp is fed by the Spring Creek, which maintains a diverse ecosystem of flora and fauna. The preserve showcases a transition zone between upland and floodplain, making it a unique ecological habitat. Established and managed for research and educational purposes by the University of Montevallo, the area offers visitors a chance to engage in hands-on learning about wetland ecosystems. While it serves primarily as an outdoor classroom, visitors can enjoy walking the boardwalk trail that provides a close-up view of the rich biodiversity, including various species of trees such as cypress and tupelo, and a host of wildlife like herons, turtles, and numerous amphibians. The preserve’s history includes use by indigenous peoples and, more recently, educational programs aimed at raising conservation awareness.
