About Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) covers approximately 422 square kilometers in the county of Surrey, England. Characterized by its chalk downlands, heathlands, woodlands, and river valleys, the AONB highlights the scenic landscapes of the North Downs and Greensand Ridge. The area features historic market towns and quintessential English villages, complemented by traditional farmland and an extensive network of public footpaths and bridleways. Ecologically, the Surrey Hills is home to ancient woodlands that support species such as the rare purple emperor butterfly, nightingales, and a variety of native flora adapted to chalk grasslands. Historically, the Hills contain sites like Leith Hill Tower, a landmark viewpoint offering expansive views towards London and the English Channel. The Surrey Hills also hosts remnants of Iron Age settlements and evidence of Roman occupation. Outdoor recreation includes hiking along famous routes like the North Downs Way, cycling on traffic-free paths, horseriding, and wildlife watching. Adventure seekers enjoy exploring the many trails and quieter lanes on foot or by bike. Photography and scenic drives through the hills provide excellent seasonal color changes, especially during spring bluebell blooms and autumn foliage. Visitor centers and local pubs provide cultural insights and refreshment for visitors. The Surrey Hills AONB attracts both day visitors from London and regional tourists due to its proximity to the capital and its combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
